Lots of Nigerian youths graduate from our Universities every year and receive their degrees in very colorful ceremonies, but return home without skills. Why are no skills attached to their university degrees? Is it because the youths are not intelligent? No the reason is that their studies in the university was primarily very academic without the practical experience of their course.

There is a story about, John a very intelligent young man who scored very high in his WAEC results, passed JAMB with flying colors and studied mechanical engineering at a renowned Nigerian University and graduated with first class honors. One day while he was at home his parent’s small power generating plant generally known as ‘I PASS MY NEIGHBOR’ broke down and their home was in darkness. The young mechanical engineer tried all he could to restart the generator but it refused to start, so his dad sent Jenny, their house girl to run down to the market square and invite Sunday, a young generator mechanic to come and repair their generator.

When Sunday arrived John the mechanical engineering graduate was still struggling to start their generator. His father told him to give Sunday a chance to repair the generator. Sunday squat down and inspected the generator for a few minutes and screwed out the plug, cleaned it thoroughly, washed it with petrol and screwed it back into position and started the generator and it started immediately.
