Surviving the holidays for allergy sufferers is often difficult. Natural decorations can cause an individual to suffer sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, wheezing and coughing. It is important to realize that the problem may not be a winter cold, but your body’s reaction to certain allergens found in evergreens and other triggers common with this special season.

Christmas is a time that many families choose to bring an evergreen tree into the home for holiday decoration. The Christmas tree may have been subjected to herbicides and fertilizers. Pollen sometimes sticks to the needles.

In addition, mold grows on the branches. Once the tree is transported into the home, they are released into the air. For example, the number of mold spores may increase by a factor of five within days of bringing the tree into the home.

For some individuals, the allergies are not due to external factors from the tree but those that are intrinsic to the tree itself. Terpene, a chemical found in the sap and oils of evergreens may cause an allergic skin rash upon contact with the skin. In addition, the odor of the tree itself can set one’s sinuses ablaze.

If you must have a live tree, it should be cleaned before bringing it into the home. Many tree providers have a tree shaking machine. The device helps to remove dead needles, which makes cleanup after the holidays much easier.

Once you have the tree at home, you can help by washing it outside and allowing it to dry in the garage before bringing it into the house. If all this seems too bothersome, consider using artificial Christmas trees. Once they are decorated they can provide a beautiful holiday display, often without the imperfections found in live trees. When the season is over, be sure to store all decorations in packaging that prevents the collection of dust or mold. Use airtight plastic storage bags and keep the objects in a cool dry location when they are stored.

If special decorations have not been stored in this manner from the year before, ask a non-allergic household member to wash or wipe them down before they bringing them into the home.

Holidays are also a time for visiting in other homes. In addition to the allergens you may face from live decorations you may also suffer from pet allergies. Minimize your exposure to pets by staying in a room away from them if possible.

Over the counter antihistamines, when taken several hours prior to attending the party, may be helpful. When you return home, take time to change your clothing and shower to remove allergens from your body.

While taking steps, such as using artificial Christmas trees and other holiday decorations can help to minimize your suffering from allergens during the season, you may still suffer flares. Be sure to use your medication as prescribed to minimize these effects. With proper planning, it is possible to enjoy the holiday, beautiful decorations in your home and the season with much less discomfort.
