Russian police arrested more than 1,700 protesters as people rallied across the country against the invasion of Ukraine.

Russians have turned out by the thousands to decry their country’s invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media.

Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were arrested on Thursday, at least 957 of them in Moscow.

As sirens blasted in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and large explosions were heard there and in other cities, Russians were signing open letters and online petitions demanding the Kremlin halt the assault, which the Ukrainian president said had killed at least 137 Ukrainians and wounded dozens more.

One petition, started by a prominent human rights advocate, Lev Ponomavyov, garnered more than 330,000 signatures by the end of the day.

More than 250 journalists put their names on an open letter decrying the aggression. Another one was signed by some 250 scientists, while 194 municipal council members in Moscow and other cities signed a third one.

Several Russian celebrities and public figures, including some working for state TV, spoke out against the attack. Yelena Kovalskaya, director of a state-funded Moscow theatre, announced on Facebook she was quitting her job, saying “it’s impossible to work for a killer and get paid by him”.

Russia’s Investigative Committee issued a warning on Thursday afternoon reminding Russians that unauthorised protests are against the law.

Roskomnadzor, state communications and media watchdog, demanded that Russian media use “information and data they get only from official Russian sources”. Some media reported that employees of certain state-funded companies were instructed not to comment publicly on the events in Ukraine.

Despite the pressure from the authorities, more than 1,000 people gathered in the centre of Moscow on Thursday evening, chanting “No to war!” as passing cars honked their horns.

Hundreds also took to the streets in St Petersburg and dozens in Yekaterinburg.

Russia’s official line in the meantime remained intransigent. The speaker of the upper house of parliament, Valentina Matviyenko, said those who spoke out against the attack were only caring about their “momentary problems”.

Allies are not doing enough to help Ukraine.
It is well with people of Ukraine.

TheWolfen:

What exactly do y'all expect the west to do? Nuke Russia so Putin can return the favour?
I understand but the neighbouring countries of Ukraine that also share border with Russia need to help.
The table might turn.
Who knows?
What if Russia invade them too.

ayindejimmy:

What do you say about Russians in Ukraine?
Well, I can't speak for them at the moment but no ill news about them yet.

For the US and NATO, there's little appetite to engage  Russia directly. Ukraine is not part of NATO. My economic classes thought me that, in regional blocs and treaty; members of the blocs are highly prohibited from directly involving themselves in economic ties with non-members. And I believe same applies in a military treaty scenario.

US, NATO and the Ukrainian allies are currently dealing with the situation smartly; running their cost-benefit analysis religiously. Sanction packages on the Russian economy and technology are enough to persuade putin (maybe not in the short run), and if it doesn't, then, watch out for their defeat thereafter.
Massive sanctions on Russian businesses, banks, HNIs; blockage of access to the world's capital market, payments systems; and cutting edge techs needed to mordernize their military,  space program, and economy are morally enough. Also, sanctions on their ability to transact in USD, Sterlings, Euro and Yen makes the entire sanctions more complicated and devastating for Russia.

To help Ukraine directly in a war footing scenario is to put people and economy at risk. As per economy, the U.S of A is around 14 times bigger than Russia. Russia would only struggle to trail smaller countries like the UK. Hence, a direct war footing approach should be the last resort for the U.S

I mean, is there a country that wants to underestimate the impact of economic sanctions, especially when the sanctions are coming from regional blocs and the real "owners" of the world's economy.

Germany had their own piece of the cake in the 1920's when they were indicted of promulgating the WWI, they paid reparations that ran into trillions ( in today's German marks). They got hit by an unprecedented hyperinflation; where their currency was so useless that a german needs currencies filled in a truck to purchase a loaf of bread. Germans couldn't afford to paint their house, they started using money as wallpapers. Their children couldn't afford a toy, they used their money to construct kites. There were cases where people offloaded money from a wheelbarrow, and stole the wheelbarrow alone. Intriguingly, In 1914, the exchange rate of the German mark to the American dollar was about 4.2 to one. Nine years later, it was 4.2 trillion to one. Germany didn't foresee this eventuality.

I end in the words of Umberto eco "Not long ago, if you wanted to seize political power in a country you had merely to control the army and the police. Today it is only in the most backward countries that fascist generals, in carrying out a coup d'Ă©tat, still use tanks" the whole scene changes when it becomes an economic warfare.

Despite its massive land mass,Putin is still annexing neighboring territories, claiming its his own people original land. Instead mk him pack ethnic russians in Ukraine to isolated island of Siberia,Mk him settle them there. He dey follow small Ukraine drag small portion of lughansk oblast which Siberia is twenty times bigger than. This Is just aggression of the highest order, unprovoked one at that.

Make those hefty Ukrainian men join d battle and liberate their country from Putin aggrresion, cos it seems the west will only intervene when russia starts using nuclear war heads or chemical weapons, cos Russia is a master at that.

Those who are giving support to Putin for wanton destruction he is unleashing on Urkraine have no human face.Putin has issued 700,000 Russian passports to some people in rebel-held areas in Urkraine so that he could justify his defence of citizens and peacekeeping claim which has turned to war.Putin's invasion of Urkraine is just a show of might and to find occasion to square up with USA and probably UK.Putin is full of pride.

Its Coward USA and NATO I hate most, they keep shouting sanctions , sanctions vs invasion?

Sanctions that had never being effective even with lesser economy and military developed nations.

Its better to remain silent rather than shouting sanctioning.

Is this the best plan the West can come up with?

Destroy Russia from within but I trust Putin to crush dissidents
