[size=14pt]Immigration deports S'African over abuse of expatriate quota[/size]

FACTS have emerged on why a South African marine engineer, Mr. James Leslie Nell, was repatriated to his country by the Nigerian Immigration authorities in Lagos.






Nell, a specialist in Volvo Penta engines, left Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, aboard Johannesburg-bound South African Airways flight 061.


A source told The Guardian that Nell was found to be involved in 'quota trafficking,' a crime in immigration laws that attracts outright repatriation. "He was sent back to his country on June 21, 2011 by the Nigeria Immigration Service for working in Nigeria with a questionable permit," the source said.


The South African was said to have returned to Nigeria using the approved expatriate quota of an automobile company, whereas he took up appointment with a different company that deals in Volvo trucks and parts.


The source said Nell had also worked previously for another Nigerian company, which has accused him of breach of contract.


"The said South African has been repatriated by our authorities. In Immigration, if Marine and Land Logistics employed, for instance, Mr. Nell, it is based on the employment of Marine Engineering that Mr. Nell is in Nigeria. He ought to have been given what we call STR Visa before coming into Nigeria. We will welcome him at the airport on what we call visitors pass for 90 days. On getting into Nigeria, his documents would be forwarded to Immigration headquarters for what we call regularisation of stay," a source in the Immigration said.
