Russians planned a lightening attack to take Kyiv Ukraine in a day or two. Ukraine and west planned to draw them in and bug them down in street to street combat. Russia has lost element of surprise. Each passing day that they don't take over Kyiv it becomes more difficult, more losses and Ukrainians will get more battle hardened.
