Nearly 6,000 detained across Russia as anti-war protests enter fourth day, monitoring site says

Russian authorities have detained a total of 5,794 people for participating in unsanctioned anti-war protests across the country, since the Kremlin ordered an invasion of Ukraine, independent monitoring site OVD-Info said on Sunday.

As of 3 p.m. ET, 2,650 people had been detained for protesting in 51 cities throughout the country, OVD-Info also reported, and 1,225 were detained in Moscow alone.

Under Russian law, large demonstrations require protesters apply for a permit, which has to be submitted no more than 15 but no less than 10 days before the event. Heavy fines — and in some cases even prison time — can be imposed on those who protest without a permit. Individuals are allowed to stage “single pickets,” which are solo protests but it is not unheard of for people to be detained for those as well.

On Thursday, Russia’s Investigative Committee warned that participation in any anti-war protest was illegal. It also said that offenses could be entered on participants’ criminal records which would “leave a mark on the person’s future”

We are currently experiencing a major historical event. This war will spill into something catastrophic for mankind, I don’t think a lot of people have realised that, they all think this will start and end in Ukraine

They will overthrow Putin. His problem is internal not even external. When you're fighting war and your whole country is protesting and your senior leaders are resigning and showing displeasure. There will be a coup definitely.

The usual!

The authoritarian regime locks up anything that criticizes it!

Peaceful protester with just placards being locked up!

Nigerians be condemning Abacha rule, but be supporting Putin. What’s the difference between Putin and Abacha!

A government that is about “criticize & Die”

Things are escalating fast! Too fast for comfort. There is still plenty room for diplomacy, why is everyone taking the confrontation approach?

World war 3 will send the world back to the stone age and that will be the lot of less than 10% of the population that may survive it. We should all avoid it.

It is just like Nigeria fighting Benin Republic because it wants to join an international organisation. They are neighbours.
Putin is fighting unpopular war. I see a new Russia, a democratic nation in mutual relationship with West to establish a new world order.

Very good.

Hopefully more protesters can join. More to be arrested and detained by the modern day Hitler. Hopefully there can be a revolution in Russia just like they had in 1917. With that revolution Russian generals can put themselves together and overthrow Putin. Hopefully too a true democrat like Zelensky can lead Russia henceforth and the world can be a better place.

Hold on. All these kids on NL, supporting putin and regurgitating right wing propaganda, I have a question for you all. If what putin is doing is so great why are RUSSIANS protesting against him? You do no research, you read nothing without an emoji yet you want to come to a public forum and be proud of your ignorance.

It doesn't make sense for Nigeria cos Nigeria has no ambition, an "also run", existing for the purpose of just existing.
Russia is not
