The Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Ahmed Lawan on Tuesday, passed the Bill granting full autonomy to the local government and council areas in Nigeria.

Out of 109 Members of the Senate, 92 members voted overwhelmingly in support of the Bill, after a clause-by-clause consideration at the Committee on the Whole.

While in the house of representative the bill to create a special account through which funds for local governments will be paid directly from the Federation Account had 257 ‘YES’ votes while 9 persons voted ‘NO.’

For the local government autonomy, 258 members of the House of representatives voted ‘YES’ while 15 voted ‘NO’.
