I want to ask professionals here, why is engineering so difficult to practice in Nigeria?

Have you seen anything that's easy to practise in Nigeria? Nigerians are supposed to be given awards every year for surviving this environment.

Because of the lack of the required machines and equipment.
ok you're waiting for other countries engineers to make machines to Kickstart nigerias engineers. Truth is ...its a Blackman problem. Desire to exist as a consumer. The inability to change his enviroment to suit his needs but rather adapt to it.

Engineering functions by having supporting industries.
A large collection of cottage industries first have to be in existence, producing things as little as nuts and bolts.
All this information from cottage industries need be catalogued (written down data). .
It is this numerous catalogued data from multiple industries that Engineers/Professors/lecturers gather into books.
That way, you read the book, find the information, and also get the address and locations of who produces what.
Sometimes in CAD software, nuts and bolts are complied in to library folders (Well, as of 2000's, many such software would have the data of American companies, Not Nigerian ones). Some of these softwares incorporate professional standards for calculations and sheets Eg. British Standards, ISO, ASME, .... etc (Somehow, Nigerian Standards is never there).
-
In the event that Nigeria has refused to have any cottage industries and recorded and catalogued data, engineering becomes nearly impossible to practice. Your foreign books, and software will be directing you to data that does not exist in Nigeria.
You have to run up and down physically looking for everything you need.
There's no coordination between the books written and the physical environment. And one gets worn out.
This is typically what make Engineering very difficult to practice in Nigeria.

Engineering is not only design and construction, it planning, innovating better ways or modernization of old ways of doing things easier.

Engineering has been going on before schools were established or the construction of pyramids.

All these have been going on in Nigeria before foreign education and religions.

The only engineering we do in Nigeria is copy-copy others ideas and constructions. This is why we prefer foreign constructions and their skilled mechanics, iron workers factory workers supervising our engineers. We call them experts (raids).

Since Carter Bridge to Eko Atlantic, Volkswagen to Lexus, how many local internships and apprenticeships have we produced to stand on their own or established inter-Africa or international firms?

No country can stand without local engineers in different fields.

There are lots of times I have ideas for something, but unavailability of materials, equipments and finance to bring it to fruition kills the dreams.
To forge parts for most of the things I want is almost impossible.

There's a great lack of smaller cottage industries required to produce basic parts cheaply to be used to constuct anything.
Metal castings require that there already exists a forging press or casting machine somewhere which deals with molten metals.
This machine needs to be running 24/7, making numerous large and small parts because it is very expensive to shut down the machine, allow it cool down the reheat it again to cast another set another time.

Here's a documentary of such type of things. White people typically went wholly into these types of large scale production as a result of fear for war or defence. Each country competing against the other, not to be left behind and destroyed by their enemies.
Nigeria has not done this type of thing as nobody is fighting us here in Africa, we aren't fighting anybody and our enemies sef are kukuma yeye people with bow and arrow.

I just hope the next president can understand the importance of civil engineering in this country. Nigeria is badly in need of competent and modern civil engineers.

Quality, modern, and high-taste real estates are in short supply in the country.

Simply because our schools are not equipped with the necessary equipment and machines to study engineering in real life. You can not teach engineering as if you are teaching History and English language or Archeology and expect the students to be as bright and happy as those that studied in Cambridge with all the equipment you can think of. Why do you think ASUU is on strike till now? The government is not concerned about the wellbeing of the students and their lecturers. They are not interested in equipping our labs and making learning interesting. Students are now left to cram and pour, pass exam and go with no single practical experience of what they studied. It's very boring, very depressing and very difficult.
Nigeria...

Practising Engineering is really expensive worldwide and it is difficult, especially for low-income countries like Nigeria. When you compare how easy for a young lawyer, primary healthcare physician, pharmacist, Lab scientist and Physio to start their practice immediately after school you'd understand.

In one of my posts, I was blasting rich and wealthy Nigerian children for majoring in liberal art and lesser courses. This is actually the reason. It is easier for wealthy Nigerian children who want to practise to get fund.
Buhari's daughter studied photography even Otedola's own read history of art and the rest of the elite children majored in useless degrees. Imagine they all read mechanical, civil or chemical, software engineering, don't you think we will have numerous and prosperous engineering firms in Nigeria?

Those are the deficiencies of our academic sector that we are trying to look for ways to make up for. Abroad they don't watch it on YouTube alone, they see it done in THEIR CLASS and they get to try it out themselves too!! That's what education should be: hands-on training, not books-on cramming
