Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin discussed Ukraine in a phone call.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has had rare direct contact with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the Russian military reported on Friday.

According to the short readout, the two top officials “discussed issues of international security, including the situation in Ukraine” over the phone.

The last phone call between Shoigu and Austin was reported in May, with both sides giving away few details about it. It was the first direct conversation between the officials since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in late February.

Sources cited by Reuters revealed that the call lasted for about an hour and failed to solve any specific matter. The exchange was initiated by Washington, Russian media reported.

According to the West, they aim to defeat Russia on the battlefield.
Has that changed? Hence, the reason for the phone call?

Appearing on the Ukrainian government’s official account on Thursday, the message quickly attracted international attention, and a fair share of criticism, before being deleted the same day.
Steve Peers, a professor of EU law at the University of Essex, tweeted: “Have you considered not commenting on other countries’ political processes – with a view to not alienating your broad base of support, and because you simply don’t understand what’s going on there?”

Others pointed out Ukrainian officials’ odd choice of the character to base their meme on, as the protagonist Saul Goodman is portrayed in the series as an unethical attorney.

Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer said he was “rather surprised” by the tweet, adding, however, that this will not affect his party’s unwavering support of Ukraine in the face of Russia’s military offensive.

Of course. Russia gets to benefit more from blowing up the dam. Same way it has been targeting infrastructure on it's bombing campaigns.

Of course Russia has more to gain. When part of Russian defence line in Kherson is flooded, they will be able to defend it well.

Russian troops are having the upper hand in Kherson for now. They are inflicting heavy casualties on the Ukrainians on a daily basis. The Ukrainians are throwing everything they have on the frontline in Kherson. Their best troops are in Kherson (including the troops trained in UK & elsewhere). They having been battling the smaller in size Russian troops (but heavily armed) in months.

Russia may retreat to the other side of the river eventually. But before they do that. They would have done unrepairable damage to the Ukrainian troops.

The Tenex unit of Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company, Rosatom, is the only firm that commercially markets high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU), the type of fuel that would be used by the advanced new reactors, Reuters reported on Thursday. “Production of HALEU is a critical mission, and all efforts to increase its production are being evaluated,” a US Department of Energy (DOE) spokesperson told the media outlet.

Russia’s HALEU monopoly has long been a concern in Washington, but the Ukraine crisis elevated the issue to an emergency because, as Reuters said, “neither the government nor the companies developing the new advanced reactors want to rely on Moscow.” As a result, Joe Biden’s administration may tap America’s stockpile of weapons-grade uranium to fill the supply void.

Washington sees the new reactors as a way to slash carbon emissions and accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels. The units are modular and are much more efficient than current nuclear plants. They’re also quicker to build. However, they require fuel that’s enriched to 20% U-235, about four times the level used in today’s nuclear power plants. Rosatom is the only commercial producer of such fuel and controls the licensing of its technology to Western enrichers.

When Russia began its military offensive against Ukraine in February, prompting the Biden administration to lead an international effort to isolate Russia through economic sanctions, relying on Rosatom became no longer viable. “We didn’t have a fuel problem until a few months ago,” Jeff Navin, director of external affairs at TerraPower, told Reuters. “After the invasion of Ukraine, we were not comfortable doing business with Russia.” Billionaire Bill Gates is the founder and chairman of TerraPower.

Biden announced a $14 million US grant in June to fund engineering and design work for a proposed nuclear power project in Romania that would replace a coal-fueled plant. The new plant would employ six next-generation modular reactors. “This will help bring online zero-emission nuclear energy to Europe faster, more cheaply and more efficiently,” he said.

Reuters noted that, without a reliable source of HALEU, reactor developers fear they won’t receive orders for their new plants. And, without orders, potential suppliers of the highly enriched fuel likely won’t assemble the supply chains needed to replace the Russian producer.

Previously there were direct flights from Moscow to Bali by Aeroflot and Rossiya, which were stopped because of the coronavirus pandemic, he said. "We just need another application to reactivate the flights," the diplomat noted.

The number of officially registered unemployed in Russia decreased from 602,800 to 590,300 people in a week, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova told reporters on Friday.

The number of unemployed does not exceed 0.8% of the total number of workers in the country, she said as quoted by her secretariat.

"The situation on the labor market remains stable, in particular, thanks to timely and ongoing preventive measures to support employment. The registered unemployment rate has remained at 0.8% over the past weeks.
