What you failed to understand is that as at the pre-existing Chinese government, the nationalist government of Taiwan was initially considered the legitimate government of China. Taiwan was given China's seat at the United Nations and was diplomatically recognized by many U.N. member nations.

The people Taiwan has been living as Taiwanese since 1942 , thats longer than Nigeria as a nation.
