A whistleblower called the war a "total failure", which could only be compared to the fall of Nazi Germany.

The whistleblower also said spies in Russia's security structure were not aware of Vladimir Putin's plan to invade Ukraine.

According to The Times, a report believed to have been written by an analyst in the FSB said the number of Russian soldiers dead in Ukraine is 10,000, whereas the Russian defence ministry has admitted only 498 deaths.

The report also said the FSB – the successor to the Soviet-era KGB – was being censured for the invasion's failure.

The whistleblower went on to say no one knew the real number of the dead in government because “we have lost contact with major divisions”.

FSB officials had been asked to evaluate the impact of western sanctions, they said.

They were informed, however, that it was a box-ticking task.

“You have to write the analysis in a way that makes Russia the victor . . . otherwise you get questioned for not doing good work,” they wrote.

“Suddenly it happens and everything comes down to your completely groundless analysis.

“[We are] acting intuitively, on emotion . . . our stakes will have to be raised ever higher with the hope that suddenly something might come through for us.

“By and large, though, Russia has no way out. There are no options for a possible victory, only defeat.”

The letter said head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, could turn his back on Putin and order his forces to fight against Russia after his “hit squad”, ordered to kill President Zelenskyy, was destroyed by Ukrainian forces.

The report continued to say that even if Zelenskyy were killed, Russia would have no chance of conquering Ukraine.

“Even with minimum resistance from the Ukrainians we’d need over 500,000 people, not including supply and logistics workers," it added.

Russian forces have opened fire on the city of Mykolaiv, 480 kilometres south of the capital of Kyiv, Ukraine’s General Staff said this morning. Rescuers said they were putting out fires in residential areas caused by rocket attacks.

Shelling also continued in the suburbs of Kyiv, including Irpin, which has been cut off from electricity, water and heating for three days.

“Russia continues to carry out rocket, bomb and artillery strikes on the cities and settlements of Ukraine,” the General Staff said. “The invaders continue to use the airfield network of Belarus to carry out air strikes on Ukraine.”

The Russians have also been targeting humanitarian corridors, taking women and children hostage and placing weapons in residential areas of cities, according to the General Staff.
