The federal government has inaugurated a seven-man committee to renegotiate the FGN 2009 Agreements with the University-based unions and come up with realistic and workable terms to tackle the challenges in the system.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, while inaugurating the team on Monday in Abuja, urged the committee to conduct this all-important assignment with the seriousness and the urgency it deserves within three months, considering the ongoing industrial action by one of the unions.

The re-negotiation of the 2009 agreements between the federal government and the University-based staff unions (ASUU, SSANU, NAAT & NASU) commenced on Monday, 13th February 2017.

However, due to a number of unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exercise has, unfortunately, dragged on till now.

The minister said the committee, which is expected to review the draft proposed FGN/ASUU Agreement, is to liaise and consult with relevant stakeholders to finalise the position of the federal government to the issues in the draft proposed FGN/ASUU Renegotiated Agreement.

It is also to renegotiate in realistic and workable terms the 2009 agreements with other university-based unions while also negotiating and recommending any other issue the committee deems relevant to reposition the Nigerian universities for global competitiveness and submit proposed draft agreements within three months from the date of inauguration.

I have no problem with renegotiation if the outcomes can be aggressively implemented. It is better to renegotiate and agree on what can be implemented than holding on to what appears to be difficult to implement, thus wasting students' precious times due to the incessant strikes.

But there was re-negotiation of the same agreement on May 2021, which they are now trying to renegotiate again, how are we so sure that they will implement this re-renegotiation and not actually call for re-re-renegotiation later in the future?
I think ASUU should not call-off the strike until all issues have been settled, we do not want to hear of any strike again, after this strike.
This should be the beginning and end of all ASUU strikes in Nigeria, we do not want to hear of any strike after this one!

Haha, but that is what it means now!
Remember that ASUU has said that FG is on their own, that ASUU is not renegotiating a renegotiated agreement again. This means that FG will not do or say anything until after three months, then they will talk and ASUU will counter and everything continues for another two months or more!
So, staying at home is not three months but a minimum of five months cool

And you really think anything can stop ASUU from going on strikes? Even if our universities start getting the best of funding from government, ASUU will always find a reason to strike.

ASUU leaders know that all their current demands might not be met at the same time. They also know what to consider fair enough when achieved from every strikes.

As far as I know, there are just two issues that FG needs to address and strike will most likely be suspended!
1) Review, upward, the ASUU members salary.
2) Pay the reviewed salary using UTAS.
If those two things could be addressed, then strike will be over. Revitalization of public Universities will never attracts strike endorsement from members of ASUU again. If Nigerians want their Universities revitalized, then they should fight for it!
If FG wants to increase fees at the public universities, they do not need to tell ASUU (they only need to tell the Governing Councils, which will inturn tell VCs to implement) and if they do, ASUU will surely talk but definitely will not go on strike because of that, the fight will be left for the students to fight, and if they refused to fight, so will the fee remain!
