Before you buy your land, you should consult a land surveyor, who will perform what is known as charting. Charting is the procedure for determining the legal status of your property. Either unconnected to the government, committed to the government, or in the process of being acquired by the government. The purpose of charting is to keep you from purchasing government land.

After you've purchased your land, the surveyor will check that it's free and complete your land registration for you. This entails a boundary survey as well as a lengthy process to register you land and maintain a record with the ministry. u If you purchased land without having it charted, still contact your surveyor and request advice.
