After the Roman empire the world has been working towards becoming a global family but back then it was the survival of the fittest, that's why God first of all sent a powerful message to all the nations occupying Canaan that His people are coming to take over the land He swore to give Abraham and his descendants.
Note that the Israelites had a specific portion where God asked them to stay, and since their God could free them from the hands of the world's most wonderful nation of that time no reasonable individual should dare dragging lands with the worshipers of such a God after all it's not the whole earth He demanded for His worshipers to practice pure worship!
