Friday, 01 July 2011

LAGOS State athlete, John Oluwashina David has recorded the state's first gold medal in Karate on Wednesday at Indoor Sports Hall of the University of Port Harcourt.

David dedicated the gold medal to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola for his support and commitment to sports development in the state.

I'm happy to have won gold for the state and I am dedicating the gold medal to the governor,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Lagos Basketball male team defeated Imo state team by 56-44 to advance to the next stage to meet Adamawa, while the female team will meet Benue in today's game at the Adokiye Amesimaka Stadium.

Earlier in the day at the ports centre of the University of Port harcourt, Lagos State boxer Fatai Sikiru out punched Okorafor Chinedu in a knockout stage of the 56kg bout and thus picking the next round ticket.

Why the competition with the Igbo man? grin

We already know who is superior at sports. Just look at our national teams.

Eko Ile,

Please see sports competition as a tool for bridging relationships and bringing comminities together.

Do not introduce the American mentality of expressing sports glory as a measure of domination and suPremacy.

I know you are proud of the achievements but we ought to be proud generally and respect the sportsmen and wome in the competition.

Eko Ile knows what he is doing.

Seeing our national teams dominated by one ethnic group is too much for him. grin

We have always been the best, the over age syndrome is giving the people bordering cameroon on its western side undue advantage. That is why Nigeria can never win the world cup.

Jealousy shouldn't be your friend. We already know the people East of the River Niger excel in such activities.

Excelling at sporting activities has nothing to do with your ethnicity, our brothers in the east dominate the national team because they have more people taking up the sport, we have had people from all over the country winning medals for the country, if we put in place proper sporting infrastructure, we will be dominating world sports.

You must not understand genetics. Some groups are are physically superior to others thanks to natural selection.

Can you list those groups and what they have achieved on the international stage.

Hehe

Karate, boxing and basketball. Three of the most noble sports of men.

We hail thee, brave warriors. A modification of a quote from a famous Nigerian seems appropriate:

Yet they came to the SE, they saw the irresistible defence put up by their opponents, and they conquered impressively, convincingly, and were graceful even in victory!

Could their achievement be paralleled?

Would it not be better for me to leave the answer to the laps of the gods?

On a serious note though, kudos to Fashola for supporting sports. And nice to see his investment paying off.

I wish we had a Yoruba nation and a Igbo nation.

Then we can settle this once in for all.

I think we would be in a perpetual cold war.

Everything about Yoruba is at best mediocre, with few rare exceptions (e.g. Soyinka)
From sports, to academics, to brawn, to perfomance, to acting, to music
Even Fasola is one overated fellow as we have read here, with flood menacing him like mad.
See as their fed ministers just they fumble. No tangible achievement compared to others.

See some correct Igbo men here. No equivalent from ya end

Chioma Ajunwa (born December 25, 1970 in Ahiara Mbaise Imo State), is a former athlete from Nigeria, who previously played football for the Nigerian women's team.[1] She is the first Nigerian to win an Olympic gold medal as well as the first African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event. [/b]She won the women's long jump at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, with a jump of 7.12m in her first attempt in the final.[2] She was also an officer in the Nigeria Police Force at the time.

Ajunwa was banned for doping, takes nothing away from her sha.

Ogunkoya has won a number of national championships, including a gold medal in 1996 in the 400 metres, gold in the 200 metres and 400 m in 1998, and gold again in 1999 and 2001 in the 400 m. At the 1987 All Africa Games in Kenya she won the silver medal in the 200 m. In 1995 at the Zimbabwe Games she won the silver in the 400 m, and at the 1999 Games in South Africa she won a gold medal in the 400 m.
At the 1996 Summer Olympics she won a bronze medal in the 400 m, behind Marie-José Pérec of France and Cathy Freeman of Australia, in a personal best and African record of 49.10, which is currently the twelfth fastest of all time.

She also anchored the 4 by 400 team that won silver at the olympics (should be gold but politics dey inside)

Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju (born 2 April 1971 in Owo, Ondo) is a retired Nigerian athlete, who competed mainly in the 400 metres during her career. She won 400 metres race in the 1991 All-Africa Games and was second in the 200 metres race. She is married to Adewale Olukoju.
She later competed in the 200 meters at the World Championship in Spain where she ran 22.28. She is also the first African woman to run under 50 secs in the 400 meters. She ran 49.43 at the 1995 African Championship
She competed for Nigeria in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, USA in the 400 meters in which she placed 7th with the time of 49.77 and 4 x 400 metres where she won the Silver medal with her team mates Bisi Afolabi, Charity Opara and Falilat Ogunkoya behind host nation America. She attended Azusa Pacific University.
I believe she won commonwealth Gold as well.
