The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, has threatened to embark on a showdown with the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, if their demands are not met before the end of this month.

National President, Asefon Sunday of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) released a statement about Wednesday’s meeting.

The meeting expressed disappointment in the Federal Government and ASUU for their lack of empathy for the plight of Nigerian students who suffer from this unnecessary show of strength.

In a statement released by the National Association of Nigerian Students, the organisation called for the immediate intervention of traditional and religious institutions to prevail on the federal government and ASUU to reopen our universities while they continue their negotiations. The group believes that every sector of nation will be negatively affected if this strike is not called off.

The NANS president call on the following NANS leaders who currently occupy political positions across the country to intervene and work with Federal Government and ASUU to end the strike.

NANS also urge the Federal Government and ASUU to reach a compromise by Monday 28th March 2022, or risk the nation’s anger. If a compromise is not reached before then, we hope that influential past leaders will lobby their friends in government and that the National Assembly will pass legislation making our public institutions work. Since they rejected the bill prohibiting public officers from sending their wards abroad, they have a responsibility to make our schools work. However, if they fail to do so, the public will respond appropriately.

Should the strike continue after our ultimatum, students across the country will resume to the new University created by the Federal Government and ASUU called The University of the Street, with Main Campus on the Airport Road, Annex Campuses in all the Major Roads in Abuja and Distance Learning Centres in all the Federal Roads across the 36 State of the Federation. I therefore direct students to bring their mattresses and cooking utensils while resuming in their new campus in Abuja and all the designated campuses across the country.

There won’t be any going back.
