The Federal Government has approved the licensing of 37 new universities in Nigeria.

The approvals were granted during an extraordinary session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this to State House Correspondents after the extraordinary FEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He noted that the new approvals, bring to 72 the total number of universities licensed by the Buhari administration since 2015.

The minister, however, did not name the universities, revealing that one of them is an online university, the first of its kind in Nigeria owned by a woman from Bauchi State.

According to him, it is expected that the University will cater for the likes of northern Muslim women who feel reluctant or are restrained from attending physical campus education.

Asked if the additional universities were really expedient given the funding challenges of existing ones, Adamu explained that the new universities are all private, with enough funds to run them, hence they should not be denied the opportunity to exist.

Besides, the Minister added, “Nigeria actually needs more universities as the available ones are not adequate to take up all those aspiring for higher education.”

Very good development. With this more candidates will have the opportunity to go through any universities of their choice to study. Let just say each of the 37 new universities has the capacity to admit 1000 students, that will translate to 37000 students given the opportunity to study. This may be students who may not have the opportunity to study simply of a reason that the existing universities don't have the capacity to absorb the many students who which to study.

Since they are more of PRIVATE universities, no problem. But it would have been better of the government invest more on the infrastructures of the existing tertiary institutions we already have.

Come and ask NOUN students how far.... People think distance or Open Learning is simple.

To assimilate and retain knowledge while working and try to keep other areas in your life functional is extremely difficult.

Conventional University is the best if you are looking at maintaining concentration.

Online universities in a country where there's no electricity, where will the students have electricity to recharge their devices and other mobile gadgets to stay connected. Network like MTN, Glo, Airtel very fluctuating. This is another episode to grace Nigerian press

As you are granting licenses for universities, make sure you provide the wherewithal to create the industries that will absorb the graduates. We cannot be having varsities all over the place and no industries to keep them busy.

Hausa/Fulani Wife providing online university for her co married women, that are busy building a home, family and country. What an awesome idea for women development. Oloshos & Baby Mama's should see this as a challenge to stay in marriage and build their future from the other room.

Beautiful.

Things I love to see and hear. It might not be perfect, but let's start first. An online university is really needed especially in an environment that insecurity has become a problem.
