The Delta State University, Abraka, has backed out of the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities strike as the institution’s management also directed the students to immediately return for academic activities.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the decision was reached after the 183rd regular meeting of DELSU Senate held on Wednesday in Abraka.

A statement containing the resumption of studies at the institution after the Senate meeting was posted on the official Twitter handle of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, on Thursday.

It read in part, “This is to inform the University Community, particularly staff, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students that Senate of the Delta State University, at its 183rd Regular Meeting, held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, deliberated extensively on the approved University’s Academic calendar and decided as follows:

“that the University approved Academic Calendar would be followed strictly;

“that all undergraduate and Postgraduate students are to return to campus immediately and commence lectures; and

“that Faculties and Departments should ensure that academic activities commence fully.

“Consequently, all students are expected to return to campus and commence academic activities with immediate effect”.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that the State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, had earlier stepped into the lingering strike, “in his proactive and responsive way”, and consequently directed the Commissioner for Higher Education, Muoboghare, and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, to end their strike and reopen the varsity.

Our sources hinted that it was following the Governor’s directive, that the University Senate held its 183rd Regular emergency meeting on Wednesday, March 16th, and directed all students and staff to return to school without further delay.

It would be recalled that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Egwunyenga had some time ago stated that DELSU, despite the institution not being a Federal University, had joined the ASUU strike.

Also, Delta State Government is said to have been paying the lecturers and staff in the state University, virtually all the allowances that formed the basis of the ASUU strike since15 years ago.

State universities have no business being in the same association with Federal universities. This is because when the Federal strike is over, they have their states to face again.

KWASU
DELSU

I hope other state universities will follow. Unilorin successful weaned itself but not without some litigations here and there back then.

Modified

Unfortunately, we operate feeding bottle federalism. Education at all level should be the turf of the state only. It is out of place in federal system for federal government to dabble into education business like it is done here in Nigeria. The first of the universities were of regional government affairs. The same for all these unity schools (federal colleges). Federal government can have specialised institutions like NDA and so on but it high time the federal government reconsidered it involvement in education. Its duty should be supervision, quality assurance and advisory

They now join Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University; COOU, as another public university opting out of ASUU strike.

COOU said they will not be welcoming the new governor with a strike and their reason is plausible.

Be that as it may, what I don't understand is the correlation between ASUU and State Universities, na still federal government dey pay state lecturers salaries? abi na for solidarity?

It is one thing to ask your students to resume, but will the Lecturers comply?

Government should learn to take education as top priority.

I used to wonder too, but I think that makes ASUU stronger than others.

ASUU full of Profs and Drs, from universities supposedly a problem solving entity for years are unable to stop this persistent strike actions.

Its a disgrace

shame on the government and the VCs and the lecturers too.

whatever the delsu mgt team did is commendable

other schools and state governors should consider such

this should not be happening in a era where our youths are already giving up on education.

They should just quit membership of ASUU. Not that they will selectively join strike when it favours them & quit when it doesn't.
