Ohraykon: Hmm...you seem to be observing things from a very superficial angle. But so that we can be on the same page...let us establish the fact that there were then even as there are now-- European and American society post-Enlightenment period around the emergence of the Industrial Revolution; those societies were increasingly becoming secular societies with "religion" at the time seen as a relic of the past. In these types of societies in world-view transition, yes, there would still be a few people who may hold onto a very "cultural" view of Christian being the faith of their fathers and the King---but on an individual level were still very atheistic or even have outspoken pagan views. So someone decided to build a ship and call it the "Jesus of Lubeck" as pointed out by this Wikipedia article: "Jesus of Lübeck was a carrack built in the Free City of Lübeck in the early 16th century. Around 1540 the ship, which had mostly been used for representative purposes, was acquired by Henry VIII, King of England, to augment his fleet. The ship saw action during the French invasion of the Isle of Wight in 1545. She along with Samson were used in an unsuccessful attempt to raise Henry VIII’s flagship, Mary Rose, after she foundered during the Battle of the Solent. She was later chartered to a group of merchants in 1563 by Queen Elizabeth I. Jesus of Lübeck became involved in the Atlantic slave trade and smuggling under John Hawkins, who organized four voyages to West Africa and the West Indies between 1562 and 1568. During the last voyage, Jesus, along with several other English ships," -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_of_L%C3%BCbeck So this was NOT a ship a Christian denomination like the Anglican, the Methodists, the Presbyterians, Lutherans or any other Church decided to build just for the purpose of carting slaves. This was something a business owner in England and later the Government of England decided to utilize for their purposes. Please do not get these two mixed up. The Church was never silent on slavery. In fact it was because of the persistent preaching and campaigns by the Church that led to the eventual abolishing of slavery. "In 1807 most people agreed that the slave trade was an ethical and religious outrage. But if that was true in 1807, why had it NOT been the case in 1707? In fact few people raised their voice against the Atlantic slave trade until the mid-eighteenth century. There had been isolated objectors, but on the whole, the trade developed without any real sense of religious objection. It was almost as if the slave trade was morally neutral. All that changed, however, when the abolition movement took off, gathering to itself churches and sects, powerful theological criticisms and offering early evangelicalism a focus for its sense of outrage. There had been, it is true, the occasional Christian denunciation of slave trading, most notably from early Puritans and Quakers: George Fox had denounced it as early as 1673. But as the trade grew, involving ever more people and industries to feed the slave ships, and as the material bounty from the slave colonies flowed back to Britain, such criticisms were drowned out by the sound of profitable trade. In the century before abolition in 1807, the British shipped more than three million Africans to the plantations. The suffering of the Africans on the ships and plantations were undeni- able, but raised barely a whimper. Indeed godly men came to think of the trade as a simple fact of life." --https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1221&context=quakerstudies The abolishment movement took the issue of slavery to a critical mass which even led to the civil war in the United States. With regards to the role of the Catholic Church--I would have to say that there is a whole lot we do not know about the way they work (and fortunately, me being Protestant says a lot too about what I think about some of their values and doctrines). I do not think King Leopold was necessarily a true Christian neither do I think his desire to use the Church to exploit the Congolese as something a true Church devoid of the corrupting influence of the State--would normally decide to do. This is why most nations colonized by major Catholic nations (Spain, France, Belgium etc.,) do end up struggling to some degree because they clearly had the State mostly influencing the Church--rather than the Church mostly influencing the State as was the case in most protestant nations especially when you regard the role of the American puritans in the abolishing of slavery. However there were some references to the Catholic Church having a conscience in this regard too: "Popes Gregory XIV (Cum Sicuti, 1591), Urban VIII (Commissum Nobis, 1639) and Benedict XIV (Immensa Pastorum, 1741) also condemned slavery and the slave trade. Unlike the earlier papal letters, these excommunications were more directed towards the clergy than the laity. In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI issued a Bull, entitled In Supremo. Its main focus was against slave trading, but it also clearly condemned racial slavery: We, by apostolic authority, warn and strongly exhort in the Lord faithful Christians of every condition that no one in the future dare bother unjustly, despoil of their possessions, or reduce to slavery Indians, Blacks or other such peoples. [Ibid., pp.101]." --https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/resource/56007/slavery-and-the-catholic-church and: "Some Catholic writers claim that it was not until 1890 that the Roman Catholic Church repudiated slavery. A British priest has charged that this did not occur until 1965. Nonsense! As early as the seventh century, Saint Bathilde (wife of King Clovis II) became famous for her campaign to stop slave-trading and free all slaves; in 851 Saint Anskar began his efforts to halt the Viking slave trade. That the Church willingly baptized slaves was claimed as proof that they had souls, and soon both kings and bishops—including William the Conqueror (1027-1087) and Saints Wulfstan (1009-1095) and Anselm (1033-1109)—forbade the enslavement of Christians. Since, except for small settlements of Jews, and the Vikings in the north, everyone was at least nominally a Christian, that effectively abolished slavery in medieval Europe, except at the southern and eastern interfaces with Islam where both sides enslaved one another's prisoners. But even this was sometimes condemned: in the tenth century, bishops in Venice did public penance for past involvement in the Moorish slave trade and sought to prevent all Venetians from involvement in slavery. Then, in the thirteenth century, Saint Thomas Aquinas deduced that slavery was a sin, and a series of popes upheld his position, beginning in 1435 and culminating in three major pronouncements against slavery by Pope Paul III in 1537." -- https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2003/julyweb-only/truth-about-catholic-church-slavery.html So yes, by the above even the Popes did speak about it. But even in that era, these Popes did not have the political power they once had over European Kings who only looked after the interests of their various Kingdoms and prosperity. I will use the example of my own village. The missionaries who came to preach were poorer than the other whites who held Government offices and who were business men in the mines. Even the secular whites looked down and shunned the other poor white missionaries who had to go to village to village, learn the local language of the people--eat and drink with the local people in that ancient dirty environment in order to gain the people's trust and friendship so that they can share the message of Christ with them. And I am sure in a lot of places on the African continent, these were the common challenges the early missionaries had to face....the rare exceptions being the corruption of Leopold's Belgium which cannot negate the massive good the other selfless missionaries made in sharing the Love and Hope of Christ. | 2 Likes |
