Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by buzugee(m): 3:06pm On Jul 04, 2011 |
all the engineers and petroleun engineers we have in nigeria and they cannot refine crude oil and neither can they build oil rigs. what exactly do nigerian engineers learn in school apart from how to balance moinmoin on top of eko so that it does not fall down ? 1 Like |

coming from someone who did not finish school, you are forgiven. The problem is not competent engineers, its corrupt policymakers. Your engineers are capable of building anything (but only what they are permitted to build). If the government decides to deliberately ignore calls for maintenance funds and refuses to monitor compliance, it is not the poor engineer's fault. Same goes for doctors who are forced to do surgery with no light. Civil engineers who are forced to build roads with improper materials thanks to corrupt contractors. Teachers forced to teach wherever the students can find a seat. Give a nigerian proper conditions and see them excel. Stop insulting what you dont understand. You don't actually need a degree to see this problem, all you have to do is look around. 2 Likes |

olas2u: Anyone would assume he knew about the industry. Exploration is done by nigerian geologists in ALL companies concerned. That is a fact. Shipping is not something to be patriotic about. Who cares who ships it as long as they buy what we produce. I dont care if they carry their tomatoes on their head as long as they leave my shop with it and leave their money behind. @Rossikk we sometimes need to try and educate the brethren. A little might sip in. |

buzugee: Petroleum engineers do not build rigs. In actual fact, engineers design the systems and you need skilled technicians to do build the systems. What is lacking is institutional/organisational capability. That requires capital, construction facilities and the like which are not readily available in Nigeria. Besides, majority of rigs are built in specific countries in the world with the competitive advantage to do so. No point reinventing the wheel when you can get the technology off the shelf and use it in your application. |
Re: Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by buzugee(m): 3:55pm On Jul 05, 2011 |
kodewrita:whatever. i know people who work in oil rigs. they give all the menial jobs to the nigerians while the white people do all the cushy and brain inducing work. |

debosky:bros how body now ? you just go missing in action like dat sha. hope all is well. i hear ya but this obtains in all aspects of naija life. why engineers cant build inverters, gens, water generating pumps in villages, solar panels etc etc, we are endowed with the resources to make them. this is why westerners come to steal these resources. because we are not using them. the engineers are busy drinking peppersoup |
Re: Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by ektbear: 4:02pm On Jul 05, 2011 |
I don't know about the process of refining oil or building rigs specifically, but these are hundred-million dollar if not billion-dollar projects. I think a lot of this is the capital, not really lack of knowledge. Or poor policy-making that inhibits business. |

kodewrita: Grammar everytime, look we have a real problem in the oil and gas, aviation, construction ,manufacturing etc.The shipping industry is big business and carries the flag of your country and allows for international trade, its also allows for reduced capital flight out of Nigeria,Go near APapa ,90% percent of the ships are foreign ,in a country of 150 million population. What about the Auto industry, the same year mercedes went to india, that was also the same year After the shagari elections, peauguot of France came to Nigeria, the indians have produced Tata powered by mercedes benz engines and have gone on the produced the cheapest car in the world .What about military, the brazilan military were at par before ,what about now ,just in 27 to 28years ,they now produce military hardware,Nigeria military produce Table and chair.continue grammar |

Re: Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by kodewrita(m): 4:14pm On Jul 05, 2011 |
buzugee: You operate on rumours. Unless your friends work for oil servicing firms, the Oil majors employ nigerians who are called "company men". They have the power to kick any (i repeat any) one off the rig, white, black, phillipino etc. They are equals and in many cases superior to those white people. Even the oil servicing companies recruit nigerians for important jobs. I have friends who have been rig managers for Slumberger, Halliburton etc in places as far as kazakhstan, Kashagan, moscow and even gulf of mexico. Nigerians. Graduates of FUTO and UNIBEN. Exceptionally Great Engineers. You have never been to a rig and frustrated friends are telling you stories. Try and comment on stuff you know about. olas2u:its only grammar if you dont understand it. All those things you mentioned, succeeded because the policies aided them not because they had better engineers. What is the connection between engineering competence and shipping policies? What is the connection between that and deliberately derelict military equipment (when certain people profit from stealing and reselling the same arms to us or worse, selling it to criminals and militants). Example; Local govt, state and federal govt tax a factory business to death, and you think the next logical thing is to blame the engineers. what is the logical connection between those? has it occured to you that some of those conditions were deliberately created by some crooked policymakers in spite of the actions of the engineers? Just be logical. simple. |

buzugee: I dey jare, how your side sef? You suppose spend some of that dooch on awon boiz oh.
Who do you think built the peppersoup manufacturing plants? But seriously, what are these resources you're talking about? Will the engineer convert iron ore to steel using his bare hands? Will he convert sand (silica) at bar beach into photovoltaic cells with his hot breath? Like I said, organisational deficiencies and lack of capital are responsible. In other countries there are deliberate policies to encourage local manufacturing but when the country has issues running an iron smelter then you can appreciate the problems involved. Besides, the efforts of Nigerian engineers go largely unnoticed. Without their ingenuity and creativity, power stations like Egbin and Kainji would have been out of operation. It is a minor miracle that our engineers have kept them running despite meagre/non-existent maintenance and parts. |
Re: Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by coogar: 4:21pm On Jul 05, 2011 |
debosky: it's the fault of the nigerian government. they are utterly useless. . . . .no solid policy on ground for nigerians to manufacture their own stuffs and when these nigerian kids travel abroad, they become instant hotcakes in the market. hardly would you go to engineering companies in europe and you won't find chartered engineers that are nigerians there. . . . .doing great things for the white folks. |

ekt_bear:ok how about things like solar power ? naija is the hottest country around. thats tonnes of energy that could be harnessed so that we can have 24 7 electricity, right ? why not come up with stuff to make nigerians lives easier ? what exactly is manufactured in nigeria again sef ? nothing |
Re: Are Nigerian Graduates Useless, Especially Engineers ? by coogar: 4:28pm On Jul 05, 2011 |
buzugee: there has to be an enabling environment for solar power and wind-energy to thrive. as it stands, we do not have those. . . . .a lot of smart people have come up with different ideas only for your govt to frustrate their efforts by charging them back to stone-age with ridiculous taxes and licensing. |

Useless Engineers - They cant even build a simple wind mill to power a kettle. I have always wondered what they teach them at uni. Building a wind mill to power stuff should be one of simplest things for an engineering graduate Go to you tube - you will find young men without engineering degrees in the western world building home made wind mills connected to battery powering shi t . The only thing u will find Nigerian students doing, is cramming or obtaining one degree to another ( thus remaining forever broke , no commercial experience ) - what a joke |
