The president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, Mubarak Bala, has been found guilty of blasphemy by a High Court in Kano and sentenced to 24 years imprisonment.

What are your takes on this given that Nigeria is a secular country? Is freedom of speech no longer guaranteed in Nigeria? Does his sentence have to do with his renunciation of Islam.

Mr. Bala renounced Islam some years ago and has been a staunch atheist ever since.

Lovely development.

What is lovely about this development?

Is it lovely that terrorists who have killed people are pampered and granted amnesty but Mubarak Bala has bagged 24 years imprisonment for exercising his right to free speech?

[/s] Your freedom ends at where the next man's freedom begins. As it stands, Nigeria is a religious country, and whether you choose to acknowledge it or not , atheism is not part and parcel of Nigeria or it's values . Now you can choose to argue this for all I care but the fact remains that atheism and atheists aren't welcomed in northern Nigeria. Case closed

But you can't force someone to believe in God. On the last day, everyone will give an account of themselves before their maker. God won't ask you to give an account of Mubarak Bala's life on earth. I thought the Quran says, "There is no compulsion in religion"?

Why is Mr. Bala compelled to believe in a God he doesn't believe exists?

Every society on earth has it's religous and moral laws and those laws existed before the advent of any form of freethinking/atheism.

Therefore , it would be morally wrong to impose or preach your own non-religious views in a place that's predominantly religious. Why ? Because it disrespects the cultural and religious heritage of that people or race .

Just the way I can't go to Saudi Arabia and shout "Jesus is Lord " is the same way an atheist can't flaunt his non-religious taunts in a Muslim dominated place. Rather he should keep his belief in the existence or nonexistence of a divine being to himself alone

You can't go to Saudi Arabia and shout "Jesus is Lord", but you can go to any Christian country and preach about Islam without fear of arrest, torture, persecution, or imprisonment. Do you know why? Islam is an intolerant religion? Why didn't Christians bay for Bala's blood when he said God doesn't exist? Mind you, he didn't say the Muslim God or the Christian God. He said " God". The fact that Christians ignored him shows how tolerant Christians are.

So Bala is more of a threat than terrorists who have killed thousands but are still granted asylum? Make it make sense. Islam encourages its followers to be violent in defence of God. That's an irony given that Islam means "Peace".

Christian countries by the nature are known to be liberal and accept people with no restriction in the spread of other religious views. This is solely Christianity's religious view , and it shouldn't be used as a general standard for other religious groups .

Which is why respecting the religious and cultural views of other religions is the way to harness true peace in the long run

Did you read this before you clicked "submit"? You are accepting that Christianity is tolerant and in the same breath saying that other religions must not be as tolerant as Christianity. Does this make sense?

Imagine what the world would have been like if adherents of other faiths were quick to violence as Muslims. So Christianity's tolerance shouldn't be used as a standard for other religious groups? Wow! In other words, Muslims should be allowed to use violence whenever they wish.

[/s] What you're staying doesn't make an iota of sense . Oya tell us why christianity should be used as a standard in places that are non-christian ? Or why can't other religious views be accepted according to the regions in which they are practiced ...why imposed Christian values in places that are against it ...?

Is tolerance a Christian value? Is it not supposed to he a universal value? Asking Muslims to embrace tolerance and moderation means imposing Christian values on them? Wow!

You can't eat you cake and have it. Muslims shouldn't see intolerance as their right and then cry foul when people of other faiths are intolerant towards them.

Tolerance isn't a universal value for if it were then we wouldn't have conflict in the world. Secondly, muslims aren't asking for you to tolerate them in the countries they visit , rather it is your laws that say you should tolerate them . Revise your law and let every man be on his own .

I am tired of this back and forth. Good night.
