After months of deadline extensions, the federal government ordered telecommunications companies to enforce compliance with its National Identification Number-Subscriber Identity Module policy on Monday, April 4.

In layman's terms, telecom companies have been ordered to prohibit the use of SIM cards that have not yet been linked to a National Identification Number (NIN).

Over 72.77 million active telecommunications subscribers have been barred from making calls on their SIM cards as a result of the directive.

If you are one of those affected by the change, here is how to link your NIN with your SIM cards, as recommended by the country's major phone networks such as MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile.

How to Confirm Your NIN

To link your NIN to your SIM cards, you must first enrol for the NIN at one of the designated centres.
After successfully enrolling, you will be given a slip containing your NIN.
You can also check your NIN by dialling the USSD code from your phone.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) asked Nigerians to use dial *346# to retrieve their NIN.
