According to lawyers representing Patrick Lyoya's family, an independent autopsy revealed that he was shot in the back of the head by a police officer while lying face down on the ground in the US state of Michigan.

The findings of a former medical examiner in the Detroit region, disclosed on Tuesday, are consistent with what was observed last week in a video provided by the police chief in Grand Rapids, Michigan, some 240 kilometers (150 miles) northwest of Detroit.

The public has not been given access to the official autopsy report, according to Aljazeera.

After a police officer pulled him over in Grand Rapids on April 4, the 26-year-old, who was originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was killed.

He and the officer physically struggled on the ground before Lyoya was fatally shot.

“This independent autopsy report confirms what we all witnessed in the horrifying video footage,” lawyer Ben Crump said on Tuesday.

“Unarmed Patrick Lyoya was conscious until the bullet entered his head, instantly ending what could have been a long and fruitful life.”

Lyoya's death has spurred protests and rekindled calls for an end to police violence against African-Americans in the United States, a topic that sparked massive Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020.

And I can assure you, if Chris Rock were to be a white man, Will Smith a Black man would have had the guts to walk up to him, attacking him the way he did.
