The first man to ever be caught by DNA - Colin Pitchfork. If you get the chance to see the TV movie, “Code of a Killer”, take the opportunity to do so. It’s an absolutely fascinating story and shows the groundwork of DNA matching that, while radical and untested in 1988, we all take for granted now.

Every single man in the village where Pitchfork lived, turned up to have their DNA taken, so they could be ruled out. Remember, this was a brand new idea, never tested before, but instead of being sceptical and mocking the exercise, everyone willingly turned up to give their sample, they were so keen to catch the killer. But sadly for the police, they did not find a match. It looked as though they had hit a dead end.

It was only by pure chance that a barmaid in a pub overhead Colin Pitchfork bragging that he had got a friend to go and give a sample in his name. She went to the police with the information and they decided to further investigate. The DNA was a perfect match and they had found their killer.

He was sentenced to 30 years (later reduced to 28 on appeal) and has recently been spotted walking around in public on unsupervised days out, so it is assumed that his release date will be soon.
