Hundreds of casual workers at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) grounded activities at the facility on Thursday over the company’s failure to regularise their appointments.

The protesters, some of whom had served the company for about 28 years demanded the immediate regularisation of their appointments from casual to regular employees.

They also demanded salary increment, payment of all outstanding allowances, better working conditions and improved welfare among others.

Some of them demanded for outright payoffs, alleging that the management of the NNPC, the supervisory agency had refused to yield to their demand for regularisation over the years.

Some held tree branches while others wielded placards with different inscriptions expressing their misgivings.

“No conversion, no quick fix,’’ “15 years to 27 years of slavery must stop,’’ “NNPC, stop technical lies,’’ “Warri, Kaduna, Port Harcourt Refineries must work,’’ “Increase our salary,’’ some of the inscriptions read.

Calling on the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mele Kyari, to address the issue, the protesters said that activities would not resume in the company until their demands were met.

One of the protesters said “the workers want to leave the job and want the management to pay them off since their services are no longer needed.

“On the ground that the management still wants our services and want to keep us, we demand for our conversion from causal staff to permanent staff,’’ he said.

The aggrieved workers protested over the same issue in 2019 and in 2020 without a resolution.

Some people are asking if warri refinery is still working

It's only in Nigeria that thieves will steal transformer cable, residents will contribute money and call NEPA to fix it, NEPA will ask residents to bring police report before they can fix it, police tells residents to bring 50k to collect police report, 2 days later NEPA is cutting residents lights and sharing bills on a transformer that has not been fixed...

So I'm not surprised hearing this

So, Warri still has a functioning refinery...

I thought we were all hopelessly or hopefully Waiting on a certain Northerner to save us from importing fuel!

I don't understand!

Refinery is the worst place for anybody to work as casual staff

No salary increment, no leave allowance, no upfront, no ppe , it’s practically modern day slavery

Tuffiaa

God forbid

That refinery dropped 98% of its casual workers March 2020 , people that have worked for them for over 10years without giving them a penny embarassed

Casual for 21 years, yet folks are sneaked in and made full staffs every other day. Folks who can hardly tell apart their right from left.
But based on who they know.

Workers of Warri refinery? What do they do there? What are they refining? Nigeria and wastage, we don't refine products in our refinery but we engage workers there, to do what actually? They also allocate huge funds for turnaround maintenance every year, what they're turning around or maintaining you can never tell cause we keep importing petroleum products.

Some people want their job status regularised in a non productive state. Is it not sad enough that the federal government is paying salaries to workers that the company is not producing anything. We bad sha! That is all I can say.
