40km is actually about 30mins by car on an averagely motorable road.It's like from Lagos to Ijebu-Ode which is the next town out of Lagos,which is quite near to any country's border for a one at war with it's neighbour.Infact 100km gives any country cause for serious concern.
It's quite clear to any discerning mind that the Russians are taking a pounding, eventhough the Ukrainians are undeniably taking heavy losses too.
Infact,assuming Russian was a country with freedom of the press and public opinion,the losses it has sustained would have forced it's goverment to abandon the war as the dead and number of casualties gets to be known by the populace.
