1. WHAT IS TRUCKING BUSINESS?

Trucking Business which is otherwise known as Transport Business is a branch of Haulage Business. It can be defined as an act of conveying goods by roads from factory, warehouse, depot, forest, seashore etc to where it is needed by the consumers. The goods can be agricultural produce, raw materials, finished goods, sand, petroleum products such as kerosene, petroleum, gas, containers, generators, transformers, PHCN poles, etc transported through carts, drays, lorries, or trucks, train.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF TRANSPORTATION BUSINESS IN NIGERIA
There are different modes/methods of transportation in the logistics industry, each having its own merits and disadvantages. From road, railway, marine, and air transportation, the method that you select depends on a few factors. For example, industries that need to transport heavy products opt for railway transportation along with road and Maritime transportation. These methods have the ability to accommodate heavier products, making them the ideal choice over air transportation.

In this post, we shall briefly discuss three (3) common types of transportation in the logistics industry:

1. LAND TRANSPORT covers all land-based transportation systems that provide for the movement of people, goods and services. It plays a vital role in linking communities to each other and It consists of 3 kinds, Road, Pipeline and Rail

a. Road
There are many advantages to road transportation, especially for companies who rely on fast delivery to retain their customers. If goods are meant to be transported immediately to far distance and within interior localities your best bet would be ground shipping transportation, water transport is notoriously slow, and it can be a hassle to book railway transportation.

b. Rail
Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail track, known as a railway or railroad. It is arguably the most dependable method of transport when it comes transporting weighty and large quantity goods. Unlike road and marine transport, rail is hardly affected by weather conditions. Transport trains will run in rain, fog, snow, and other conditions that would otherwise delay shipments carried by other methods.

c. Pipeline
Pipeline transport is the long-distance transportation of a liquid or gas through a system of pipes—a pipeline—typically to a market area for consumption. Liquids and gases are transported in pipelines, and any chemically stable substance can be sent through a pipeline.
Pipelines exist for the transport of crude and refined petroleum, fuels – such as oil, natural gas and biofuels – and other fluids including sewage, slurry, water, beer, hot water or steam for shorter distances.

2. WATER TRANSPORT is the process of transport that a watercraft, such as a bart, ship or sailboat, makes over a body of water, such as a sea, ocean, lake, canal or river. It is notoriously slow, but that doesn’t matter when a product has a long lead time. This is a great option for those looking to ship bulky items across countries or continents.

3. Air Transportation Air transport is the mode of moving goods and personnel through the sky and it is the fastest method of transporting especially from countries to countries or intercontinental. Air transport is extremely useful for many reasons: it`s convenient, fast, and doesn’t have to compete with natural barriers. While road transport is the quickest way to deliver goods that only have a short distance to travel, air transportation is the fastest option for freight that have a further destination—it’s even regarded as the best mode of transportation for perishable goods for this reason.
