FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE: D’TIGRESS DISAGREE WITH 2 YEAR BAN

To whom this may concern,

We, as the Women’s National Team of Nigeria would like to speak on the government's recently placed two year ban on all Nigerian Basketball International competitions.

The D'Tigress team would like to state that we do not agree with this ban. This ban is taking away all our future competitions, accomplishments and goals to elevate, inspire, and make Nigeria proud!

We would like to be given the opportunity to play for our country that we passionately love to represent in this upcoming @FIBAWWC competition.

We have worked very hard to be 3x Afrobasket Champions, Olympians and now we are blessed with another opportunity to continue that representation for Nigeria.

We want Nigerian Basketball to continue to grow and succeed on every level; from the local leagues, grassroots and even on the international stage!

Contd: …We believe that all levels of Nigerian basketball can excel with the proper attention, togetherness, and organization. Our team is a testament to how successful Nigerian Basketball can be and how we have been an inspiration to all Nigerian athletes across the globe.

We wish to express our gratitude to all the coaches, medical staff, organizers, and fans. This ban not only penalizes us but you all as well. Your commitment and loyalty to our team will never go unnoticed.

Our goal is to play and represent Nigeria proudly! We, as the Nigerian Women’s National Team plea for the reversal of the International Basketball ban for Nigeria. We hope to be heard! Thank you.

Yours truly,
D'Tigress

I think they want to use the Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan strategy.

In 2008 Nigerian football authorities presented an inflated budget to the government for the hosting of the 2009 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Nigeria. President Yar'Adua then suddenly decided that Nigeria would no longer host the tournament. This shocking decision forced the sports authorities to drastically reduce the budget. (Nigeria hosted a very good tournament)

In 2010, after a disastrous World Cup both on and off the field, President Goodluck Jonathan decided that Nigeria would not get involved in international football for two years. FIFA gave us a deadline to reverse that decision and the football authorities promised to shape up. President Jonathan changed his mind after receiving promises from the football authorities. (Nigeria went on to win the 2013 African Nations Cup).

The Basketball Federation has been embroiled in a crisis for almost 4 years. There are 2 presidents and 2 boards. All efforts by the Sports Ministry to resolve the crisis has failed. In fact, some people now accuse the Sports Ministry of being a party to the crisis. Well, the Federal Government has now announced that Nigeria will not take part in international basketball matches for the next two years and that an interim committee will be set up to manage the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF).

My main concern is that our girls are scheduled to take part in the World Cup in Australia in a few months and nothing should jeopardise their chances of competing in the tournament. I am convinced that they will have a good outing and I don't want another Rashidi Yekini - South Africa '96 situation.

Since they've refused to resolve their internal crisis, the government move is a good one.

However, we should know the 2 years ban is more a less the barking of a toothless dog. All the FG wants is that they resolve their crisis and after then, they would review the ban and it would be promptly lifted.

The First step to sport development in Nigeria is to chase that Dull Sport Minister who doesn't know anything about sport Administration.

When they do this, I'll consider them serious.

Some of the Players gave up the opportunity to play for other Countries in other to represent Nigeria, I remember clearly how the Ogwumike sisters went to court in other to be able to represent Nigeria.

Honestly the treatment these players are getting is not fair, the Sport Ministry can do better

In 1960 Nigeria told the Queen that they could do a better job governing the country by themselves... They told the white man to hand them power... And the white man did.. We dey 2022 now and the country is almost dead thanks to over 50 years of illogical corruption and unpatriotism

4) Youthful local talents wasting away because of a dysfunctional league

5) National team players, both for men and women teams, are drawn entirely from the US and other overseas leagues

These are very valid reasons, why the hell are the players from U.S.A and other countries instead of our local Nigerian players? When will we start to appreciate and embrace our own instead of foreigners

But who came up with this idea in the first place ? Why not direct efforts at reviving grassroot sports and leave D` Tigers and D` Tigress alone. At least they rank among the best in Africa in their respective categories. This Kontri na wa

Which YarAdua and Goodluck strategy? How can you ban a sports where our women are the leaders in Africa. This is a decision deliberately designed to kill the career of these women
