It is painful when friends neglect you only to remember you in times of their need, and it is more painful when you help these friends and they abandon you again, only to remember you once again, when they need your help.
The above illustration can be likened to the relationship of the non-statutory Nigerian political party delegates and political aspirants who go about seeking their support and that of key stakeholders in the 36 Nigerian States, when they begin consultations geared towards their ambitions in the dire period of forthcoming elections.
With barely nine months to the 2023 general elections and barely a week to the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries, the polity has been heated and have seen the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo like several other presidential aspirants making stops at State capitals to have a word or more to the party delegates and stakeholders on why he needs to be the party's flag-bearer in the upcoming party primary elections, but unlike some of these politicians who are offering empty promises on the premise of what they have not done, Professor Yemi Osinbajo's eye for the Presidency comes with a lot of experience of what he has done and will do if voted.
He is well experienced in the current affairs of the nation and this reasons he reiterated when he made stops at Ondo and Ekiti States where he was received by the Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, at the capital city of Ado– Ekiti emphasised that the very reason he wants to succeed his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari is his desire to serve the country and its people with zeal, knowledge and the experience he has garnered in public service, especially as Vice President and Acting President in the last 7 years.
This is why on 16 May, 2022, he urged the party delegates in Dutse - the capital of Jigawa State in his town hall-style interaction to vote their conscience and the best for the country and not moneybags who will abandon them when they get up there. And this also is not entirely on the moneybags, who feel that as long as the delegates continue to collect their money when they know these moneybags do not have the interest of the people at heart, then, they believe the delegates do not care about the party either but just all about their money. As a result, their first action when they get into office is to relegate the delegates to the gutters and become power drunks to an extent no one dares challenge their authority, simply because those who should act as checks on their overbearing nature, have swallowed their money and cannot call their bluff. Hence, it is on this note that Professor Yemi Osinbajo has beckoned on the party delegates to not be swayed by these "cash and carry" gimmicks in this electioneering period, if truly they (delegates) want to remain relevant in party affairs, even after the election is done and dusted.
To cap it all, the distinguished APC delegates who have supported the Vice-President in the past and continue to show their unalloyed support to Professor Yemi Osinbajo on his road to the Presidency, should never be in doubt that after he wins and fulfill his Presidential ambition that he will abandon his staunch supporters. In all, they should always have it in their minds that their goodwill remains in the heart of PYO, a man of gratitude and PYO remembers!
