Nigeria Spends N98 Trillion Importing Food Between 2007 And 2011 by prettyG: 4:59pm On Jul 19, 2011
The Nigerian food import bill between 2007 and 2010 was N98 trillion, according to Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, the new Minister of Agriculture.

Adesina stated this on Monday in Abuja when he assumed duty in Abuja. He added that over N635 billion was spent to import wheat, N365 billion on rice, N217 billion on sugar and N97 billion on fish importation.

He noted that in spite of the volume of food importation, the natural and agricultural endowment of the country, its productivity had been “very low”, adding that such a development contributed to the growing food insecurity in the country.

The new minister, however, said that Nigeria was not lacking in the production of cassava, having been adjudged the largest producer of the commodity in the world with 45 million tonnes.

Adesina regretted that in spite of this advantage in the production of the commodity, the nation accounted for zero per cent of global value added.

On the other hand, Thailand that accounted for 10 per cent of cassava production had 80 per cent added value, he observed.

He described the Nigeria status quo in agriculture as not acceptable and called for urgent attention to be given to the agriculture sector.

“In those years, Nigeria accounted for over 60 per cent of the global supply of palm oil and 35 per cent of groundnut,” he said. “It also accounted for 23 per cent of groundnut oil and 15 per cent of cocoa, while farmers from North to South made money from their sweat. The quality of lives improved, children went to good school, our Nation was food self-sufficient, farmers fed the nation but alas today the glory has been lost.”

Adesina promised to promote the transformation agenda of the government stressing that President Goodluck Jonathan had set agriculture as one of the major forces to drive the agenda.

"We will revolutionalise agriculture and transform the sector as a business that must work for small and commercial farmers, that will unlock wealth and allow Nigeria to meet its food requirement and diversify income of the nation," he said.

"Over N635 billion was spent to import wheat, N365 billion on rice, N217 billion on sugar and N97 billion on fish importation."

It is not good for a nation to not be self-sufficient when it comes to food production.

taxes ? nigerian people dont go abroad to buy food. so am assuming the govt is doing all the buying. is it from taxes or oil ? oil revenue annually is like 70 billion. where does the rest come from ?

The people themselves are importing the food. Private distributors are importing the food and selling it to Nigerians for higher prices.

First off, I doubt the accuracy of the figure.

Second off, a lot of posters are asking ridiculous questions. Who told y'all that Imports have anything to do with National budget? The National budget is only about N4.7 trillion. When a country is said to import certain amount, it refers to the citizens of the country importing stuuf (Dangote et al).

I would expect our imports to exceed our National budget ($27bln) and our oil income (which is roughly equal to the budget), but the only reason I doubt the figure is that it is higher than the GDP ($300 bln) which is the combined worth of the whole country.

We're trully blessed and enjoying the better things in life.

On the other hand, what will happen to our economy if the stated amount is what we receive for exporting those food items to other countries.

We can and able to provide these foods, why importing.

About N1.2trillion on carbohydrates and sugar alone, no wonder Pile, diabetes, jedijedi is common, compared to the protein of only 97billion provided the figure is accurate. It is a pity most of the food items can be grown locally if we embrace agriculture more.
Re: Nigeria Spends N98 Trillion Importing Food Between 2007 And 2011 by Reference(m): 1:00pm On Jul 20, 2011
Its very hard to determine but if there are about 150 million souls in this country and they spend an average of 200 naira a day on food (as a thread reported earlier) then we are assuming a total food bill of 30 billion a day and something like 11 trillion naira per annum. Now we may argue that with a vast proportion earning less than (1 US dollar) 155 naira a day how is this possible and counter it with the fact that a lot of people earn that low but grow some of their own food then it might just be possible. Now just how much of this is imported, dunno. But a pantry worth 33 trillion over 3 years (2007 - 2010) is a far cry from the figures bandies about by dear minister. That's just hogwash. Hope it isn't a smoke screen for shady deals and illegal capital flight.

Our forex income is mainly from oil. if imports exceeds forex income, government will have funding issues. I also don't think the figure is accurate.

wether figure corret or not is not the issue but why a country as big and gifted ( with both human and natural- agriculturer and mineral resources) as nigeria should be importing food

its a big shame we havent still identified our problem let alone finding solutions.

lets keep breathing fresh air we are indirectly paying for with death traps as roads and some cluesless groups claiming rights over others lives while a microscopic few are loothing whatever they can for their generations yet unborn
lets watch and see how far it goes,
