The ijaw word "Apapa" means groundnut and that is how Apapa got its name.

Before changes to land use decree under General Obasanjo in 1977, Ojora family owned Ajegunle. Oluwa family owned Apapa. Apa is the original Awori name. Colonists mislabeled and called it Apapa. Infact, Apa is recited as an Oriki for many of Royal Heads in Idungaran. The reason for that is a story for another day.

Chief Tijani Amodu, Oluwa of Lagos took the colonists to court and charged them with criminal infringement for seizing lands in Apapa to build port without his approval. Herbert Macauley defended Oluwa in London in 1920. They returned home with victory. The Queen recognized and acknowledged Dosunmu had no right to cede lands in Lagos to colonists and Oluwa remained the sole owner of Apapa. He was compensated. This precedent ruling confered land ownership and authority on the 11 Idejos of Lagos.

Ajegunle was a swamp, it was landfilled. It was not a fishing ground.
