There has been a rash of fake news stories in the past 2 weeks (see posts below for details).

CP ALABI WARNS PURVEYORS OF FAKE NEWS AGAINST CAUSING NEEDLESS PANIC IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, fdc has observed with dismay repeated and concerted efforts by mischief makers to destabilize the peace and serenity enjoyed by the good people of Lagos State.

These mischief makers and war mongers have devised ghoulish plans to release to the public at regular intervals concocted social media messages alleging stockpiling of arms and an impending attack on Lagos State.

CP Alabi uses this medium to allay the fears of Lagosians and assure them that all human, material and operational resources have been fully and optimally deployed across the length and breadth of the state towards ensuring there is absolutely no breach of the peace.

In the same vein, the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of the Command have been placed on high alert alongside all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders, all in a bid to ensure that any possibly planned attack is promptly and decisively nipped in the bud.

Consequent upon the carefully laid down security plans/strategies, all residents of Lagos State are urged to go about their lawful duties without panic or fear of harassment/intimidation. CP Alabi equally enjoins Lagosians to remain very vigilant and report suspicious movements and persons to security agencies.

There was a sensational story last week that "Fulanis were stockpiling weapons at a place called Buhari Estate in Badagry". This crazy story was accompanied by voice note messages and videos like the one below. The crazy messages were translated into many languages.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgCj5YOP6vw

However, the truth of the matter is that Buhari Estate is owned by the Nigeria Police and it was built by the cooperative society for officers and men of the force.

Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG

PRESS RELEASE
BUHARI ESTATE IS OUR PROPERTY, OCCUPIED BY POLICE OFFICERS, FAMILY, NOT ARMED MEN – FORCE PRO

The Nigeria Police Force wishes to state categorically that the Muhammadu Buhari Estate situated at Agemowo, Badagry, Lagos State, is the property of the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multipurpose Society and by extension, the Nigeria Police Force.

The Estate is occupied by Police Officers, who purchased the property under the Police Cooperative Scheme, and their families, and not armed men as speculated in a viral video where a mischievous alarmist alleged that the estate has been invaded and dominated by armed men, in an attempt to launch an attack on Nigerians resident in Lagos State.

It is unpatriotic and indeed saddening that the maker of the video, who seemed educated and ought to know the dangers of disinformation, hurriedly and maliciously created and circulated the piece of falsehood, with a clear intent to cause unnecessary and avoidable panic. Members of the public are hereby advised to discountenance the video as the claims are totally false and frivolous.

The Nigeria Police Force urges the general public on the importance of carrying out due diligence before churning out narratives with sentimental colourations to prevent causing disaffection in light of the multi-ethnic nature of the nation.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, has directed the Force Intelligence Bureau of the Nigeria Police Force and the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos State, CP Abiodun Alabi, to commence discrete investigation into the video, and possibly bring the originator to book as the alarmist’s act is punishable under the law.

Soldiers that had recently passed out from Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria were being transported to their postings in Lagos and some people recorded videos of their movement and claimed that Fulanis were invading Lagos.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin @BenHundeyin

Fake News: The insinuations in this video by a citizen-journalist is not only misleading but entirely baseless. It is most unfortunate that this is coming from supposedly enlightened people who should know a thing or two about verification of wild claims before spreading same.

The Lagos State Police Command has reached out to Nigerian Army authorities in Lagos State. It was unequivocally confirmed that these are newly passed out recruits from Army Depot, Zaria posted to Lagos. They are currently in the premises of 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja.

Lagosians are urged to disregard the videos and it’s accompanying message as a piece of fake news that it is.

In as much as I agree with the orders of the Nigerian police, it should still be a point of warning that citizens can diffuse warnings.

No one says a civilian can't have information. The below steps are:
1. Verify
2. Report appropriately through the right channel

Don't go there please. That's a different topic. Only when a country is ruled by dictators, then you want information to be regulated. I believe sanctions and whistle-blowing should be introduced instead.

Yes. Fake news should be really cautioned upon.

All lights and darkness of this Great nation lies within the Government, that is why we need someone responsible to paddle our Cano.

We just need a functioning LAWS to curtail sources of many problems in Nigeria.

All these rubbish in the name of fame in the blogging should be stopped.

Any unverifiable posted news should be strictly sanctioned.

The so called rumor mongers care about Lagos, kindly look into their concerns, as police needs all information it needs.
Lagosians report any suspicious persons to the police, you can reach them easily on Twitter, or any of their control numbers which you can find in google...let's protect Lagos. We all will agree that fulanis are bad people, I will not want them around me...we must not allow them have their own dwellings in Lagos.

People will rather be sheep than a shepherd. Sometimes they know the news get as e be but they'd digest and spread it anyway. Many people are more comfortable being herded.

My mother is always forwarding some of these WhatsApp rumors. The most recent one was apparently sent by a colonel on June 11 asking people to stay indoors on June 12 and 13 because of an impending attack in the SW.

Mischief makers and war mongers should beware, but we know there's no smoke without fire. Our intelligent and secret security officers should not discard informations, even if it's mere propaganda.
