My Journey From Nigeria To Dubai Part 1 by Dubaiguy: 4:50am On Jul 01, 2022
Hello my people, its been ages, but today i'll share with you my journey from how i left Nigeria and how things has been

First off - I used to say Dubai is a pathway especially if you are a Nigerian it cannot be considered as a destination(As at today, i dont think it should even be considered as a pathway or route anymore)

Nigeria
I used to be a Teacher/Assistant Headmaster in a school in Lagos where my salary was 10,000naira when i started in 2010,but was increased to 12,000naira in 2015. So i had to do alot of other things to keep body and soul.
I was blessed with a Woman godmother when i got to Lagos, she picked me up while i was sleeping in an uncompleted building embarassed (Backstory for Another day). She help me to get the teaching job and introduced me to side-hustles like Alaga ijoko/iduro(Wedding Engagement and Introduction Anchor).

I am actually a very shy person but i managed to learn how to become extrovert when i need to make money and then back to my shell after each event. She taught me event decorations as well, so we go together decorate centres and i anchor the events at church, schools, weddings, anniversaries and so on

I also started coaching students also. 3days private lesson for pupils at their homes, all these are what i was doing just to fetch some cash.
I also play drums and a very little keyboard, so i do get some tokens after playing at some churches.
While doing all these, during 3rd term school holiday, i enrollment myself as an apprentice to learn barbing(was told i can make loads of money if i travel to the US and that was my plan). I wasn't always consistently going to the shop because i had to attend school coaching lessons, but i manage to grab as much as i can during the training and i was able to start barbing kids on Sunday evenings around my area.

How Dubai Journey Started

Around June 2015, a neighbor from our former area in Ibadan also a family friend called and informed my Mum about a slot opened in Dubai(his Son was in Dubai), incase she will be interested in wanting me to go. So my Mum she called me and was like how much do you have? Since this US plan might take a while, why not go to Dubai first and then move to US later from there.

Raising Money

If you are a bit familiar with gigabytes and Megabytes around 2014/2015, you will remember tweaking IMEI and stuffs like that, through this means, i was able to raise around 450k. I paid the money for the visa processing and the guy was faithful enough( don't try this now ooo. He paid his boss and my visa was processed. As per travel ticket, my godmother did all she could to help me raise money for ticket and that was how my trip to Dubai began.

Dubai

August 3rd 2015,

I landed in Dubai around 5am and i got the first shock of my life

1. HEAT!!! Everywhere was already bright and sunny so early in the morning
2. I got to the accommodation and what did i see? BEDBUG.

Many people will not tell you this, Dubai is home for bedbugs most especially if you stay in a bedspace.

I was taken to the accommodation where we were 8 in the room, and the owner of the company that made my visa came to collect my passport (i was told thats the norm) shocked

First Day At Work
The next day we were told to dress up for work and guess where i will be working?

Car wash

Emi? odindi Uncle Samson (Me? A whole Uncle Samson) that always dress smart every morning with tie.

On my first day we washed between 200-250cars(6 of us) at the Toyota showroom in sharjah, and within 3days,my body couldn't stand it, I started feeling pain around my upper back and shoulder, i complaimed bitterly to the boss and on the 4th day, i was told to pack my baggages and was transferred to Al ain(in Abu Dhabi).

Life In Al ain

In Al ain, i am to work as a cleaner, i took it in my stride especially since it was not as difficult as the car wash and i was awarded employee of the month for couple of months and with time, i was promoted to become cleaner supervisor. The only perk is, i now clean less, my salary which was 900dirhams(60k back then) remained same. The unfortunate part was that the salary will not come until the 10th-12th of the new month.

It was difficult to survive but i kept saving, especially when i saw Nigerians working as Security guards and earning 2000dirhams. With time, i had enough saved to go for the security certification. I took unauthorized 5days off to attend the security training (salary was deducted but i was focused on the bigger picture) when result came, i passed and I started applying for security job. But everything got messed up when i heard more details about security job[s]I did not make full findings before going for the training, na that 2000dirhams dey enter my eye[/s]. I heard that as a Security guard, you don't have day-off, meaning you work throughout the month, if you take a day off, your salary will be deducted and in some companies, you get only one day off in a month.

I was demoralized especially the fact that my hard earned money had been invested. I stopped applying for Security jobs because i couldn't imagine working 30days in a month. After a while, some people advised me to go enrol for Safety course, i made enquiry and started saving and i enrolled myself again in NEBOSH & IOSH safety course.

I passed and started started sending my CVs but got nothing because most companies wanted someone with experience. I got myself involved in visa processing (As agent hoping to get some profit) i collected money from close family friends in naija to help process 3months visa and i got scammed, i started paying debt LEFT, RIGHT & CENTRE

After around 18 months in Dubai, i was able to bring 2 of my siblings(1 came with his wife) and My wife also came. One of my siblings could not get a job after 3months and had to go back home, my wife as well.

A month to the end of my contract, the owner of the company called me to ask if i will like to renew, which i rejected. I refused and told him i got a job alreadyFaith

I kept applying for HSE jobs but got nothing, a day to the end of my contract, i decided to start applying for different other jobs especially Sales. (i Googled retail companies in Dubai and got loads of companies) i started applying and sending my CV to all the companies.

My contract finished and i stopped going to work, i left the company accommodation moved in with a friend of mine who was into Sales. I followed him to work and learnt from him alot. After contract expired, i had 28days grace period to find another job and get another sponsor or go back home.
A week to the end of my grace period, a company called me and asked me to come for an interview for a sales job, i was excited and started preparing for the interview until my friend reminded me about most sales job requesting for driving license.

I had to call back the HR to inform them i dont have a license, so she can confirm if i should come or not, but luckily she said the job does not require having a license.

Playing Smart

On the day of the interview, i was supposed to be there by 11am, but i was late, why? I had no money for transportation so i had to start begging at the bus station, i got lucky, someone gave me what i needed to get to Dubai, but i got to the location late. Just trying to be smart, i reset my wrist watch to 10:45am and hide the time on my phone and said to myself, if they ask me why i was late, i will show them my watch and tell them i wasn't, but i got upstairs and no one questioned me. Long story short, i passed the first stage of the interview, went for the 2nd interview about 3days after and passed as well and i was told to come and start work immediately. At this point, i was having just 2days left on my grace period, they agreed to apply immediately and if i should be on overstay by the time my visa is out, i will have to pay from my salary which i agreed to.

In Dubai, after the end of your contract, you are entitled to be paid some % of your basic salary multiplied by the number of months you worked as a gratuity. I was expecting to get that and use it to settle down with my new job but guess what? My boss said i already collected my gratuity, i tried to report him to the Ministry of Labour in the country and i got the shock of my life. This man presented a document showing my signature signed that i already collected the money. (The signature i signed when they were processing my visa was lifted and pasted on this document)..

Sleeping By The Roadside

Now i have to resume work in Dubai, which means i have to move all my luggages to Dubai. After my first day at works, i had no where to sleep since i was new in Dubai, so i went to the mall opposite my place of work hoping to sleep there, but around 12am, the security guys came to me and told me to leave, i tried to lie and told them i had a flight to catch by 3am and won't want to waste money booking a hotel. They refused and i found myself outside the mall, having nowhere to go, i just looked around and slept just by the roadside and when it was dawn i ran back to the mall early enough to get cleaned up and prepare for work again....

You can check the source for more information and please don't send me a pm. Rather a comment on the video will be seen and addressed.

Na to turn Agent for job and visa, or go Dierah go do cargo, or drive illegal taxi (hoping they no catch you) , Do Alcohol delivery (praying they don't catch you) , or indoor barbing

But what I will tell anyone is if you can't do Yahoo Yahoo, Please for God's sake and sake of your sanity don't head to countries like UAE..

When it comes to labourer and petty Job a Nigerian isn't built to survive such hardship unlike Bangladesh, Indians, SriLanka and Pakistan wey no get life and can do any job for any kobo

Take a good example of security job that pays 3000 dirhams... You will stand on your feet for 12 straight hours, work back to back for 7 days a week and wont get a month for Atleast a month or two when a replacement is available

UAE has gone so bad brother. If you are black African, you have limited chance, if you be Nigerian, you have ZERO CHANCE

To get the freezone visa na war, what people are doing now is 3years partnership visa, and i must tell you, its so hard to get job wit it because it is partnership visa(a visa that indicates that you own a business) but agents sell it to people anyhow unfortunately, many will pay close to 1.5m for it and still will not get any freelance job.

Well I know Allah would bless you for warning stubborn Nigerians using the little experience you had and your platform unlike people that keep decieving others to doom

If many are honest like you , some would be careful before making plans for UAE

The judicial system is a joke they know these things but you as a laborer doesn’t pay their taxes na the company dey pay their money so screw you and the case you opened because na DOA!!
