First of, Obi didn't say that infrastructure cannot improve an economy (he built schools, roads, hospitals, etc.), he only emphasized HDI. When Bill Gates came to Nigeria, he hammered on HDI. Infrastructure is good, it would drive the economy, but it's just a piece of the pizza. Infrastructure vs HDI See Abuja-Kaduna railway/highway: infrastructure is built, but acutely low HDI has put it in coma. Same thing with power installations being vandalized by Vandals. Same with pipelines, refineries, etc. . . . Yoruba adage Ọmọ ti wọn o kọ, ni a gbe ile ti wọn kọ ta. Translation: The pikin that's not built/trained, would sell the house that you built. |
