Eight teams have progressed to the knockout stages of the 2022 Merrybet5Stars Premier League after group matches for the Abuja region were concluded on Sunday.

The foremost grassroot league, which is in its fourth season, had 16 teams compete from the group stages with 8 teams in each group.

At the conclusion of Group Matches in the Federal Capital Territory group, Virtual FC topped the table with 14 points to advance to the knock out round alongside Paul E, Theo FC and current champions of the league, Suicide Jibril.

High Scoring Turf Arena, who were one of the pre season favourites narrowly missed out from qualifying for the knock out stage on the final day of group games.

In the Federal Territory Group, Mess Up FC advanced as the front runners ahead of Trinity FC, Sense FC and 12 Strong FC to the knock out stage.

Following a conclusion of the group matches, the league will proceed on a two weeks transfer break to enable clubs strengthen their squad for the decisive stage of the season.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the League, Olumide Aturu, the transfer window provides a great opportunity for clubs to explore the financial aspect of the game, even at the grassroot level.

“Three players can be added by teams to their current squad with the maximum number of players not more than 15 per team. All transfers must be made public and failure to do may attract disqualification.”

The 2022 Merrybet5Stars Premier League will see grassroot teams across the country compete in the Lagos and Abuja Regions before a National Finals to determine the league champions holds in Ibadan on the 1st of October 2022.
