Are more common among those who were abused as children or received insufficient attention from their parents

Researcher Mareike Ernst and her colleagues used a sample of 2,510 participants between the ages of 14 and 44.

The results showed that about 40% of the participants had at least one tattoo or piercing, and about 25% of the participants reported serious abuse or neglect at an early age.

Among the participants who reported childhood abuse, 48% had tattoos or piercings.

"The study confirms the positive associations of tattoos and piercings with childhood abuse and neglect in a representative sample of the population.

This referred not only to physical abuse but also to emotional forms of trauma," the researchers concluded.
