When ASUU declared the strike on February 14th, Majority were heartbroken but hopeful they can finally get what they want from the government. ASUU demands includes: the payment of earned academic allowances, Improved salaries, payment of salary arrears, Release of revitalization funds for universities and the replacement of IPPIS with UTAS.

Five months later, ASUU president on channels TV said their salaries were stopped, they are being blackmailed with hunger, but they will continue the strike for a year or even two if the federal government does not harken to their demands

The few ASUU members I know of are currently finding it hard now, things are getting expensive and they have not been receiving their salaries, they have been looking for an alternative source of income ever since, and if the strike is not suspended, it’s going to get worse. So is ASUU’s decision to stand by the strike a smart move?

Personally, I don’t think it is a wise move for ASUU to keep up the strike. Their members are getting impatient and want an end to it, They are clearly affected, the students are affected, Other persons doing business on campuses are affected, parents are affected, but the only people not affected here are the people the ASUU president is threatening with one or two years of continuous strike - the Federal government.

It Is obvious that the federal government do not care about the strike, reason they have not said anything about the agreement the re-negotiation committee led by prof. Nimi Briggs had with the ASUU delegates for almost a month now despite Dr. Chris Neige claiming it has been submitted to the president for approval.

The Reality is that, if this strike lingers for a year or two, members of the ASUU will rebel against their leadership, the students would be disinterested in returning back to school after series of protests, and other worse things, but the federal government and its constituents will go about their daily engagements, receive payment at the end of the month, campaign for the forth coming elections and live their life without anyone complaining at their doorstep.

My opinion though, comments are welcomed

Anytime I see an article on ASUU, this man’s face just comes to mind.

He said they are ready to stay at home for 2years until their demands are met.

Unbelievable

ASUU members are tired but they can't just end the strike when their number 1 demand (UTAS) is pending. Once FG approves UTAS this strike is off. They are enduring now with pains coz if they call off without FG approving UTAS then the whole strike was just a waste.

You mean FG approving UTAS ain't Possible?

Sincerely I think lecturers are underpaid, taking away some privileges like teaching in multiple schools, and earned allowances will further make them leave in penury. They know this that's why they clearly don't want IPPIS.

The government also knows this, they don’t want to pay lecturers excess. They feel a lecturer is supposed to be paid for teaching in only one school, thereby keeping the extras for themselves, Everyone is selfish here
