Most people belief that competition is healthy, as it helps them stay on their toes and constantly improve on what they are doing. As true as that may sound, I found out recently that competition is a dark art that actually makes us lose even when we think we are winning.

Competition is a stiff race that steals our sleep, our attention, and money in many cases.

Look at Coca-Cola and Pepsi for example. Whatever Pepsi does to attract more customers, Coca-Cola will also want to do in order to stay competitive, even if it's not convenient. It's the same with Nike and Adidas.

Another example is Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. Or Wizkid and Davido, I love them both though, thrilling as it is for neutrals, this competition is unhealthy in quite a number of ways. One's success is often used to sadden the other. This is why they are constantly trying to outdo each other every year, even at the detriment of their team mates, folks, fan's, family,or country at times.

Social Media nko? Competition is the reason you are never satisfied with what you have and would always envy the other person, looking for ways to outdo them, even if you are not ripe for that kind of rise. This robs you of the right kind of attention you should pay to yourself for steady growth, and makes you over reach for something that might distort your entire growth journey.

Beware!

Instead of that competition mentality, why not try a monopoly mentality? Blue Ocean instead of Red.

The greatest and wealthiest people in this age are not those who did or have been doing what everyone else is doing. They are people who innovated, or took an existing process and made it ten times better.

Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma, Trevor Noah, name them!

The next set of millionaires are not people who will build another Facebook, or create another Google, or start another PayPal...NO!

They are people who will create something totally new, out of what is existing.

So instead of starting that business and doing it just the way your friends or every other person is doing it, why not think of something totally innovative or find a better way to do yours?

Instead of following the traditional way of climbing the ladder, why not spare a thought to create a new way to fly?

Innovation doesn't hurt. It only requires a careful approach, clear thought process and most of all, the strong mental will. Sadly, not many of us are willing to give all three.

But if we do, innovation is the future legacy we will be giving our children's children. The wealth is unquantifiable.

And guess what? There are still a gazillion of ideas yet to be explored. So, start thinking!
