7 Reasons Why Yoruba Nation Agitation Is Failing by sweetmelanin(f): 2:58pm On Jul 08, 2022
There are many reasons why self determination movements like Biafra, Niger Delta republic, Yoruba Nation etc are crumbling. However, I'll be raising some points around the Yoruba Nation movement.

1. Ignorance and poor knowledge of History.
Yoruba History isn't taught in Nigerian schools and this very intentional. The result of this is evident in the very ignorant population. Many Yorubas aren't aware of their true heritage and have little to no knowledge on the vast and diverse reach of Yoruba heritage; most Yorubas do not know of the ancient Oyo Kingdom and do not know that Yorubaland and Yoruba people extends into Togo, Benin and beyond.
The documentary Bigger than Africa (Netflix) highlights this beautifully. Many do not fully understand what Nigeria truly is, and the enslavement it represents. This lack of awareness breeds complacency in the general populous.

2. Unappealing to the Youths.
The agitation for an independent Yoruba nation does not come off as a modernised, sophisticated movement and this automatically makes it unappealing to the modern-day Yoruba youth.
The movement presents itself as one tailored for traditionalists, ifa practitioners and those wish to return the ancient Oyo ways of living. There is also a covert shunning of those who aren't fluent in the language, again, isolating a large percentage of young Yorubas who have grown up in Lagos or abroad and cannot speak the language. The lack of linguistic ability does not relegate the cultural heritage of the modern-day Yoruba and it is time to accept that we have evolved as a people.

3. Oduduwa - the problem around this.
There's no nation in this world that has an idol / deity as it's identity. The Oduduwa icon which has been incorporated into the proposed national flag is not only unpleasant to look at, but is also a highly bizarre way of branding the movement. A nation named after an ancestor/deity (Oduduwa) can never stand. It's just not done anywhere, nations are often named after the language of the people i.e. Yorubaland or Yoruba Kingdom.

4. The hyper focus on Juju/ Yoruba Spirituality.
This obessive, hyper focus on Yoruba Spiritually isolates a majority percent of Yorubas who do not believe or practice Ifa. Worse is the condescending and aggressive attitude of talking down on practitioners of Abrahamic religions which turns people off and sadly misrepresents the beauty and diversity of the multi-culturalism of Yoruba people.
This approach is highly segregatist and portrays the movement as a Nation that would be strictly subjected to the practice of Ifa / yoruba spirituality, thus putting off a large majority of modern-day Yorubas of different faiths.
While we must appreciate and acknowledge our heritage, there should be a clear distinction between understanding history and engaging in the diabolical practices of our ancestors which majority of Yorubas today refuse to return back to.

5. Poorly designed and conflicting flags.
There are 2 conflicting flags which, must be acknowledged and are both poorly designed. This shows lack of organisation and reflects badly on the movement as a whole.

6. The Cult-like Caucus.
Yoruba nation activists form many cults and caucuses within the movement - if you're in, you're in. If you're not, you're not.
Friction and in-fighting amongst groups, rumours of misappropriation of funds, betrayal and lack of cordination has resulted in the formation of numerous groups and subgroups e.g. Ilana Omo Odua, Think Yoruba First, Yoruba Nation, Clubhouse & Twitter subgroups etc..

7. Political Jobbers, Saboteurs and Lack of Genuine Agitators.
Hidden motives and selfish political ambition have caused many to sabotage the movement. Yorubas (sorry to say) generally do not think of the bigger picture, the focus is on "what can I achieve today", "how can I make a name for myself". This lack of collectivism and short-sightedness around the next generations Yorubas to come after us, has hindered the movement in more ways than none. The upcoming 2023 elections has become a major distraction.

Summary: The unitary system of Nigeria has proven itself to be a fraudulent business arrangement designed to exploit certain regions for the benefits of other unproductive regions. As thus, a return to regional system of governance or division along North & South might be the suitable solution to the complex, blood letting, quagmire called Nigeria.

Only Yoruba moslems are against it

You are far more ignorant than the people you accused of being ignorant. Your write up reads like something you will hear in a bar after several bottles of beer.
Identification with Oduduwa is one of the reasons why agitation is failing, seriously?
And Yorubas in Lagos are not fluent in Yoruba? What language do they speak?

Yoruba nation was never a movement of true Yorubas
Most people promoting it are yorubas that want to feel among when Igbos are talking
Or some that just want to follow trend

Indeed.
Name one country in the world which is named after a dead person/ancestor or a diety ? Just name one.

You lost me when you mentioned IPOB. The obsession with Igbos is real.

Most Yorubas - except the radical Muslims (a small myopic minority) know that a Yoruba nation would be more prosperous than a united Nigeria.

Rhodesia was named after Cecil Rhodes until the country got independence and the name changed to Zimbabwe.
This is just so lame.

I asked you to name a country and you named an illegimately created, colonial sub-state which never gained recognition as a country? Laughable grin

Such a child. You've pathetically tried to use IPOB as shaming language against Igbos but unfortunately, IPOB isn't globally recognised as a terrorist group despite Buhari's desperate & embarrasing pleas to the international community to proscribe them.
.. but guess which organisations are globally recognised as terrorists? Boko Haram & Fulani Militia. This is why your terrorist Fulani government are rebranding them as Bandits.

Ignorant post for a fair weather supporter. You're the one that needs to learn history if you think no nation is named after a diety or ancestor.

Google 'Israel' for starters

Fair enough - You can stubbornly insist on naming Yorubaland after a dead entity called Oduduwa and put that false idol on your ugly cult-looking flag.

Then wonder why the agitation has flopped.

Yoruba nation lost steam because in my opinion, The Yorubas poor knowledge of history like you mentioned and because Yoruba want to be like whites more than they want to be themselves so since Nigeria is a white creation it's better to most of them

Rhodesia never gained recognition? Now you are talking about what you don't know. How is the creation of Rhodesia different from the creation of Nigeria?
You wanted a country name afer a dead person and I gave you one but you are now shifting the goal post.

Israel is alive and handsome and it is Oduduwa that is dead and ugly? Bro just say you're wrong. You can say you don't like the flag and name with adding fake incorrect k-leg to make your opinion look like facts

Keep reaching. It is highly insulting to bring up an illegimate colonial British state created for the purpose of looting Zambian & Zimbabwean people of their diamond, as an example for Yoruba people seeking an independent nation.

Again, Rhodesia was an illegal state - not a country and was never globally recognised.

Truth is truth bro. That flag is a flop - yes, it is ugly. Very ugly. I can't convince you otherwise so please remain adamant in your failed agitation.

What made the creation of Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and many others legitimate and Rhodesia illegitimate?

Even the whites we try to emulate cannot tolerate such foolhardy i.e. allowing another Ethnic group rule over you while syphoning your resources for thier own benefit, meanwhile bringing nothing to the table.
This is why every European 'tribe' has it's own nation. Even the UK is four seperate countries in one. They fought wars to ensure each border is protected and no nation can leech off the next.

My problem is that most Yorubas are too docile, the igbos especially and Nigerdelta always make move even though some might be wrong moves but they make efforts,Yoruba doesn't make efforts, their believe in trying to go the peaceful way always might not always be the best.Yoruba need a more forceful approach to things
