Boko Haram: Time to create state Police – IBB

ABUJA — Former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has made a case for the creation of state Police to effectively check the wave of terrorist attacks by militant groups across the country.

He said: “In view of our growing concerns about security, the need to reconsider the option of introducing state Police becomes more imperative than ever before.

“Democracy and development can hardly thrive in an atmosphere of violence and insecurity. We must, therefore, leverage on the opportunity provided by the proposed fresh start to diligently address the constant threat posed on national stability by activities of restive youths in our midst who unleash terror and mayhem on innocent citizens on a daily basis without the slightest provocation.”

We always knew IBB has a brilliant mind - that's the genius part. 

The problem has always been that his drive for power, matched by a great dose of callousness, causes him to do ANYTHING for the sake of dominating his surroundings (including out-playing himself) - actually the phrase "dominate my surroundings" is almost word for word what he once said about himself.

IBB's best role, as he was advised during his ill-fated attempt to go back to Aso Rock, is to be an elder statesman.

Without the allure of power, IBB can make immense contributions.

Now that a major northern power broker has endorsed state police & fiscal federalism, and the south has been ready forever, I hope the legislature will get cracking - instead of spending time debating GEJ's unserious tenure bill.

Babangida is as evil minded a leader as they come. . .however, I have to agree with this suggestion. GEJ should be working very fast on creating structures like this for Nigeria! Use the appropriate instruments of governance and create a State Police Force like the countries we all like to reference operate. Free up some of the useless bureacracy and power in Abuja to be used where it is needed not Ringim putting traffic wardens in a cell for voicing a honest opinion. In better climes, he would not even qualify to be anything let alone IGP due to his total ineptitude of the organization he claims to lead!

considering policing is actually a communal thing in alot of societies, i agree with the degenerate. But that's not to say the federal police will cease to exist, if anything it should be further strengthened so they compliment each other.

The creation of state / regional police force should have been done by successive governments. It is a well known fact that it will be of advantage in fighting crime.

On the other hand, some elected state officials may turn these police forces to their private security establishments.

State police is necessary. Even now states government spend a lot on police in their state.

State police will enhance policing of our country.

IBB is not a genius, he has never been a genius and frankly he will never be one. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida is as duumb as a rock.


Children, Let me tell you about geniuses, especially political geniuses.

Benjamin Franklin was a genius, his friend James Madison was a genius, those were genius leaders

Mao Zedong was a genius, same for the man who took over from him and reformed some of his crude ideas to give us the China of today: the man Deng Xiaoping.

Lee Kuan Yew the man who turned a backwater country like Singapore into an Asian Tiger was a genius, he died with the title Minister Mentor in may 2011, and oh boy, he earned it!

Julius Nyerere the Mwalimu was a genius, maybe all of his ideas have not succeeded but we respect his mind still, even Karl Marx was not perfect.

Thank you !!!!! It is funny how the threat of violence is the only things we Nigerians seem to understand. We like to think that consideration only applies to our leaders but this is not so in my experience. When Fashola began advocating for State police ages vociferously we discussed the issue robustly on Nairaland. I was one of those who backed the idea constantly ,as the only way forward, for a Nation facing more sophisticated security challenges , while many opposed if. Obviously , they still had the luxury of doing so back then.

Today, in this thread, I have not read a single post that disagrees with State policing !!! All Nigerians are now cowered into unison agreement through sheer terror !! Our security forces have had to be totally demystified by Boko Haram before it became clear to many of us that serious leaders like Fashola should be free to have a decently trained and efficient police force even if others prefer to persevere with the 'jeun jeun' , ill-trained and unmotivated policemen we have today. Next time, I hope some will look at issues proactively and support good initiative vociferously instead of waiting for the shite to hit the fan before they are running around helter-skelter.

My brother, no condition is permanent . Better pay, better equipments, better welfare packages and improved bonuses might lead police officers to be more dedication to duty.

Love or Hate IBB, you can never accuse him of lacking in ideas or cluelessness.

Before the election he was the only candidate who had the courage to promote reformist agendas like leaner cabinet (to reduce the cost of Governance), devolution of power, streamlining the cost of Governance or state policing.

Though folks like Soludo made the same arguments, IBB was the one candidate who made it his campaign theme.
