It was reported earlier today that the official unveiling of Alhaji Kashim Shettima was postponed by the APC national headquarters without offering any reason for such postponement.

However, any follower of events since Shettima was announced by Tinubu as the APC substantive running mate, would agree that the uproar and backlash that the choice has generated must have been the major reason for the postponement.

Could it be that APC want to make a last minute substitution of Shettima?

Or could it be that they want to take time to pacify aggrieved parties within the APC especially the Christian bloc who have vehemently rejected the choice of Shettima as running mate?

But whichever reason it is, Tinubu is checkmated. I mean, e don choke am; as in, e hang like fish bone for him throat.

If he continues with Shettima, he would continue to lose support and supporters especially among Christians.

Or how would you expect a Rotimi Amaechi who is a Knight in the Catholic Church to have the courage to campaign for a Muslim-Muslim ticket to Rivers people? Or how would you expect Umahi who is a Deacon in Christ Embassy to campaign for an all Muslim ticket? Or Oshiomole who is also a Catholic to really go about trying to convince Edo people to vote for an all Muslim ticket. These people and many others will be stoned by their people and might even be sanctioned by their pastors.

Add that to the fact that the Christian community for whose reason he would be taking such action would still not be convinced as majority will see it that Tinubu has bared his fangs as someone who cares more about winning than the welfare and interests of Nigerian Christians.

What if he drops Shettima?

Another option left for Tinubu now is to make a last minute substitution of Shettima’s name and choose a Christian northerner to douse the tension generated by his choice of Shettima. But you know the implication of such action?

First, Shettima, who is an ardent campaigner and follower of Tinubu will be demoralized and so would Babagana Zulum of Borno state. The implication is that these two men will no longer campaign for the Tinubu ticket with vigor and enthusiasm like they would have if Shettima is retained.

Again, Tinubu’s supporters in Northeast in general, and Borno in particular, will feel angered hard done by such action and might abandon the support for Tinubu in protest which would now restrict Tinubu further to only Southwest and some states in Northwest (not guaranteed).

So, you see, whatever Tinubu does now he’d be choked.
