Zimbabwean dollar was obsolete. ZWD, the first Zimbabwean dollar was introduced in 1980 at initial Zimbabwe currency to USD= 1.47. At 2006.

At some point, a banknote of 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollars was printed and equals about 70 USD.

Then 10 million Zimbabwe dollars with inflation at 100,000 percent, few can afford even basic goods. Zimbabwe had the world’s highest inflation rate at 100,000 percent. A loaf of bread was 10 million Zimbabwe dollars.

April, 2009, the Zimbabwean dollar was suspended indefinitely and the government has adopted a multiple currency framework which includes the Australian Dollar, Botswana Pula, British Sterling Pound, Chinese Yuan, Euro, Japanese Yen, Indian Rupee, South African Rand, and United States Dollar.

On 24 June 2019, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe abolished the multiple currency system and replaced it with a new Zimbabwe dollar based on the RTGS Dollar.

1 U.S. Dollar = 361.9000 Zimbabwe Dollar

20 trillion Zimbabwean dollars = ~55,300,000,000 U.S Dollars ($55.3b)

Inflating your currency when you don't have a strong economy to back it up is equal to mumuism at the highest level. Even with a strong economy, it is better maintaining low value currency when you have an export based economy because the low currency will make people buy more of your goods and at the end bring more revenue due to increased purchases.

They should get themselves off the sanctions and probably work to get their economy on good footings instead of this madness.


The west imposed sanctions because of Mugabe and Mugabe is no more and they're still struggling. Mnangwagwa has failed.
