It is not that we don't like reporting crimes through the proper channels to the police, or that we are afraid of going to the police station, but the actual truth is that the Nigeria Police Force are the ones that are not helping matters.
..
Anybody that goes to report cases at any nearest Station of the Nigerian Police would just be ready to be faced with lots of bottlenecks - which are created by the police officers themselves.
..
Below are SOME of the major bottlenecks:

1. Every other available officers in the station would always be making it very difficult for the person to have an audience with the DPO, unless some amount of money comes out of the person's pocket.

2. In order to ordinarily report any crime, the person must pay for the opening of the CASE FILE.

3. After paying for the CASE FILE, the person must also pay for the writing of the statement.

4. Inside the statement, they would tell you a lot of things which you must describe, even those that you might not even have paid attention to.

5. Even after all these payments, the police-station CAN NEVER give the person any updates on the case again. Even though the person was the one who reported the case, and wrote the statement, and paid for the case file. They would always say that they are still investigating.

6. If the person starts to pressure them to be quick in their investigations, they would prepare a bill which they call “Mobilisation” and present to the person, which would help them leave every other jobs they were supposed to do and do the one at hand. And even at that, they MAY still not arrive at a very good conclusion.

With this now, you can see why it is so difficult for anybody to rush to any police station in order to complain about anything at all.
You must pay for the case file, and pay for the statement, and those are just for the start of the delay in response and actualising anything meaningful.

These reasons are also why it is difficult to operate the POLICE EMERGENCY NUMBERS in Nigeria.. Because,, if a person calls the police on phone to complain about a crime, then, who would be the person to pay the money for “opening the case file” and the money for “writing of statement”??

The rot in the police is just too much.

And for those of you that do not know exactly how the Nigerian Police works,, please you need to know this now...

The Nigerian Police is not as easy as...
You arrive the station and enter the Station.....,
Then you ask around and find the officer in charge of complaints....,
Ok.. Then you tell him about the crime...,
And they ask you some questions which you would provide answers to......,
And then he makes some series of calls..
And BOOMM... Some policemen would rush outside and jump into the police vehicles and drive off to the location you described..
..
NO WAY.!!
THEY DON'T WORK LIKE THAT

Sometimes ago, the Nigeria Police Force published some emergency phone numbers for the various States..
But these numbers never worked...
(In case of any emergency, if you hoped to get good results by calling those numbers,, then you would be in for a veeerry loooonngg journey without an end.)

Now, with such a bad Police-Phoning experience,, who would like to call the police on phone again??

Reporting to Nigeria police is a waste of time and energy.

They have always told us that the Police emergency number in Nigeria is 112..
That number have never really worked.
Nobody had ever successfully used it to report anything to the Nigerian Police..

Now,, they are planning to launch 199 very soon.

So,, if 112 didn't work,, is it 199 that is going to work?

There are no functional official means for anybody to report crimes remotely in Nigeria, and have good results.. And that was why the use of social media to report crimes became an option.
Reporting crimes on the social media tended to work, just because such social media posts would go viral, and then, the Nigeria Police Force would start to do Eye-service, so that it would appear as if they are gallantly doing their jobs well.

Thus,, whenever cases go viral on the social media, with pictures and videos flying around everywhere, the DPOs that are involved would start to receive lots of calls from “Above”,, and they would quickly rush to open a case file by themselves and bear the cost, then, they would write the statements and bear the cost,, and they would mobilise themselves by themselves and bear the cost too.. And finally, they would do a very quick investigation in order to have good responses to give to those persons from “Above” whenever they call again.

So, must we continue to report cases on the social media and pray they go viral before our Police would attend to them??

Recently in Anambra State, the Governor after realizing that the people of the State do not report crimes to the police any longer, He published Government-Controlled Government Rapid Response Numbers.
These numbers do not belong to the police.
They belong to the government..
And once the people call these numbers and give information to the Government, the Government now calls the Police from “Above”.
..
That sounds funny,, isn't it??
..
At best, people are gladly calling those Government Rapid Response Numbers,, and they are giving very useful information to the government through those numbers.

A functional organization tries to gather information and feedback from the people from all available sources.
