Why do you think nowadays some people are marketing unmarketable product in politics while they clearly knew that they can't sell it,

Is there any joy with what they are doing,
Or are they paid to do so.

For instance In politics the winner of the election must be either Government or Opposition,
Is there anywhere in history where the third person or flag bearer wins ?
