PDP Crisis: How Ayu, Obaseki, Tambuwal Worked Against Wike’s VP Candidacy by nairavsdollars(f): 5:41am On Jul 25, 2022
It has been revealed how Iyorchia Ayu, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo, and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State prevailed on Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate for the 2023 election, not to pick Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate.

The interview granted last week by Atiku Abubakar on his choice of Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate has been causing ripples in the party and may not end soon with just few months to the 2023 general elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Arise TV which was monitored by Daily Independent, Atiku denied report by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State that the 17-member committee set up by the party to search for a running mate recommended Wike for the position which he then rejected.

According to him, he was only presented with three names and he chose Okowa, whom he felt could deliver the needed votes in discredthe Southern parts of the country.

On calls for the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, Atiku also said he can only step down if he is elected as president in 2023.

“The committee deliberated. But there was no vote and they recommended three names for me to choose because they know it is my prerogative. Ortom chaired the panel and he knows. What Ortom said was inaccurate. There was no record of any vote".

“Governor Wike was not rejected. Nobody was rejected in the party. But you must understand that it’s the prerogative of the candidate to pick his running mate — a running mate he believes he can work with amicably, and then also deliver the policies of the party, and also try to unify the country.

“Governor Wike is a brilliant politician. He’s courageous, tenacious. I believe he has a future in the political evolution of this country. It’s not a question of rejection.

Certainly, not. I think it’s too harsh a word to say that we rejected Governor Wike. Certainly not.”

Reacting to Atiku’s interview, Wike who has maintained an uncommon silence on the matter disclosed that he will soon speak on recent happenings in the party.

“On Atiku, I will speak soon and Nigerians will know the actual truth of all that has transpired in the PDP in recent times.”

An aide of the Rivers State governor said he (Wike) may be forced to speak on the agreement reached by PDP governors with Ayu to resign if the party produces a Northern presidential candidate and other details relating to the crisis which has trailed the emergence of Okowa as Atiku’s running mate.

When contacted by Daily Independent, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) said while Governor Wike has every right to be angry, they are trying to prevail on him not to reveal sensitive information as it will only worsen the situation.

The former military governor, who spoke off record, said the fact that Governor Wike has majority of governors on his side shows that the general feeling was that he was unfairly treated.

He said Atiku should have maintained silence like Wike while concerned stakeholders are working behind the scene to mend the fences and put the party in shape ahead of the general elections.

Giving a breakdown on what transpired, he said, “The party set up a committee for the search of a running mate.

In giving the committee the assignment, the party leadership penciled down three names of serving PDP governors.

The three names were Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom; Nyesom Wike of Rivers and Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

“In the course of the deliberation, the members were told to speak on the three men. 14 spoke in favour of Wike while three spoke in favour of Okowa. Nobody recommended Udom.

"The panel then resolved that having gotten the highest recommendation, the vice presidential candidate should be Wike".

That is why if you look at the report submitted by the committee, Wike’s name is number one on the list, followed by Okowa and Udom’s name is in third position.

“After the meeting ended, the information got to Wike on what transpired. So, he was already aware that he is the choice of the committee.

“After the national chairman was aware that it was Wike that was recommended by 14 out of the 17-member panel, he strongly objected to it because he felt Wike will go after him and make his position to be ceded to another zone. Of course, that was the agreement they had when they wanted to make him national chairman.

"The agreement was that Ayu will step down if the presidential candidate emerges from the North".

“Ayu then assembled some pro-Atiku people and they went and met the presidential candidate in the night.

They then prevailed on him that he cannot work with Wike as he will be too strong for him and that Okowa will be easier to work with. That was how the story changed from Wike to Okowa.

It is a very easy choice for Atiku to accept Okowa because he invested heavily in Atiku’s campaign during the PDP primaries. So, Atiku picking Okowa is like a reward.

“Governors Godwin Obaseki, Udom Emmanuel and Aminu Tambuwal were part of the people who accompanied the national chairman to Atiku’s place.

“Atiku himself was not really comfortable with Wike based on the confrontations between them in the past.

"After the convention, he met with Wike and promised to make him his running mate but some of his associates and party stakeholders warned him against it".

“Wike was planning to come to Abuja for the unveiling but as soon as he got report that his name has been changed for Okowa, he stayed back. Many of the governors who also felt dismayed by the rejection of the panel recommendation also stayed away from the unveiling of Okowa.

“That was why governors were not in attendance when Okowa was unveiled. Only Obaseki and Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, were in attendance.

The Bauchi governor thought it was Wike’s unveiling but when they told him it is now Okowa, he didn’t like it and left.

“When the Southern governors were asking for Southern presidency, Okowa was going through the backdoor to work for Atiku.

That was why Wike was angry after the primaries and he accused some governors of betraying the South.

“That is the whole truth about what transpired. I don’t know if there are other things that Governor Wike knows which may not be privy to some of us. But even if he does, how will that resolve the issue? It will only make matters worse”, he said.

cool

Wike failed and he would learn from it, coming back stronger next time

Presidential ticket of opposition party of Africas largest Democracy is not a joke... Yet Wike came second in his first attempt only defeated by super hyper rich Atiku who has contested 6 times since 30 years

Next time Wike must control his emotions and bridle his tongue, he must learn to forgive easily like Jagaban and move on

Its very Okay for Wike to express himself if you ask me. It takes a big man with a strong heart to still be silent after hearing shit concerning him.

If it's true then Obaseki's involvement really baffled me, why is he always bitting the fingers that fed him? Anyway I'm not bothered, history have it that even the first Obaseki in the history of Benin kingdom was a betrayal so it seems he's a true descendant of his ancestors.

I always start by making my bias very clear,I will vote Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the next President of Nigeria.
Back to the matter, when I posted on another thread by Senator Adeyeye that Alhaji Atiku is a selfish and treacherous human being,I wasn't expecting another thread to quickly confirm my statement.
Alhaji Atiku appointment of Governor Okowa only confirms my statement about him,he rewards only treacherous and selfish people like him.
What has Governor Okowa done nationally for PDP As a party since he joined it in 1999,I'm not talking about Delta politics,I mean for the PDP nationally, how many party chapters has he gone to quell squabbles, how many bigwigs from outside Delta state has he pulled into the the party, the man is so local that he can't even Interfer with Bayelsa politics.
As for Alhaji Atiku,he appears every 4 years to eat the Presidential rice on the platform of PDP,to the detriment of those who have laboured to put the party afloat.
I don't understand why this man didn't sacrifice his selfish ambition for the candidates of Southern Nigerian in the PDP.
No matter how much you criticize and curse the APC,by nominating Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the party has shown all those who work assissidously for it will be duly rewarded.
As for Governor Wike,I will advice he gives it to ATIKU and Okowa wotowoto, let him refuse to drop a dime of Rivers money for the presidential campaign,a man that refused to honour simple agreement will definitely find another excuse to renege on a bigger one.
God bless Nigeria.

so forgivesness got Tinubu his ticket abi? issoright

JAMO84:
Before the parties Primaries, PDP Dundees, especially from South East, always come here to tell us about how APC will betray Yoruba, how Tinubu will be destroyed by the Fulani Caliphate. That scenerio eventually played out in the PDP. Igbo got seriously thrashed by the Sokoto Caliphate. Obi had to run to a mushroom party. Wike was lectured about politics 101, he will never recover from the blow he received from his Fulani slave masters.

As for us, we Laboured for just 8 years and got rewarded with the ticket to the highest office in the land, after being number 2 for the previous 8 years. Those that have been labouring in vain for 24 years got nothing, absolutely nothing. They had to deceive them with one fake Igbo from Delta State as a reward for 24 years of hard labour.

WE KNOW THE REAL SLAVES

You laboured abi you endured for 8 years the killings, hardship, sufferings from your slave masters only to be given a ticket Sowore also has.

Indeed common sense is not always common to some people.

Tales of a childish adult

This reminds of many years ago when I first met our landlords daughter: a lady sent from heaven to me.

Forever willing to allow me handle her bress.

At the age of 13, that was the greatest blessing I could ever pray for. That was about 16 years ago though.

As at then, i wasn't having dreams of being a doctor or engineer yet.

I had no need for cars, houses or money.

But you see...

Oh my god...!!! I don't even know how to express the joy I get from seeing that lady cos I knew our agenda was same.

She'd wait for everyone at home to be busy in d parlous before we'd go to an empty room and oh....

Not again...!!!

I'm already getting same goose pimple and excitement of years ago.

OK, she'd partially bring out one of her balloons and let me feel what it means to be 'alive' from her bossom.

I couldn't comprehend why something that's the size of a tangerine gave me happiness that's higher than a mountain.

The handling/secret affair continued for weeks till one day, my cousin being a childish adult of about 23 years caught us.

I nearly died of shock that day.

Here's why I'm bringing up this story and how it relates to the topic....

At first ,he was disgusted by our act.

He shouted...

"Chiiiisos kraist of Nazalet....!!! So this is what u people have been doing? God forbid...!!! I will tell ur mummy for you"

We pleaded all we could and luckily , his heart was moved to pity.

He started eating my meat for about 4 days but I dared not complain.

I washed his clothes too cos he threatened that if I don't comply, he'd expose d secret.

I stole money from mums purse for him.

I fetched water that he was supposed to fetch

This continued till one day, he came to me with a strange fire in his eyes.

It took him up to a minute before he opened up to me.

He wanted me to talk to that lady.
He wants to be d only one pressing d bress of that 13 year old girl I was helping my life with .

Of course, If I don't comply he'd report me.

It's a long story though but that was how I missed out.

The threatened lady complied.

It later evolved to full blown consensual sex even though she was still about 16 then.

At about 18years or so, they later fell in love but I was completely out of d picture.

My cousin was just a childish adult and cried 'wolf' because he felt left out from d party.

Same way WIKE is crying wolf because he is left out from d party.

Out of 3 names, only one running mate is needed meaning that 2 guys would be left out.

In one way or the other , someone MUST miss out.

Same way everyone in a classroom can't take d first position at same time.

Have I killed myself for steadily taking the 44th - 47th position at school (out of 50 students) ?

No ooo...!!! We accepted who we are and continued with life.

I never complained about it on social media or nairaland.

let's all learn to accept situations and move on in life.

Threatening to spill secrets because u missed out only paints us black.

It burns bridges.

Taints our loyalty.

Makes us less trustworthy because no one trusts a snitch.

Let's learn to respect peoples decisions, both the pleasant and unpleasant ones.

Selling premium software's like Grammarly, Quillbot, Canva pro, Turnitin, VPN , etc for as low as 3k has really taught me a lot of life lessons even though i can't remember most of those lessons.

Don't blame me though.
I clearly made it know that I steadily took the 44th - 47th position at school (out of 50 students)

But I can't forget to keep secrets and accept whatever situation I find myself in.

For instance, would u believe that i 'secretly' hid my contact in my nairaland profile?

God bless Nigeria.
God bless our president.
God bless me.
