*GENDER EQUALITY AND THE CONTROVERSY GLOBALLY – MISS CHIOMA MERCY NWANKWO*

Gender equality has become so controversial globally and in Africa in particular.

However, the biblical account of man didn’t encourage gender discrimination, even though the man was created first in the image of God. Later a woman was created from one of the ribs of a man which shows that they are one.

Little wonder therefore the biblical arithmetic of man and woman is “one” instead of two whether came together and had so remained to this day despite the civilization of all types.

It is tradition and culture that have swayed the gender bond into separate logs thereby introducing bias into gender issues by placing the man higher than the woman.

However, gender equality is now becoming stronger than before.

This is because, following the events of the recent recommendations from conferences from various parts of the world, even the United Nations have asserted that women should be given equal chances or opportunities like their male counterparts in terms of educational opportunities, job opportunities, political opportunities, and economic opportunities.

A case point at Beijing China where the first international world women conference meeting was held to discuss 35% of every establishment including state and national assemblies should be given to women.

Women on their own have recently risen to the challenges as they now occupy very important positions in different global organizations like “W.T.O.” whose headship is by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iwuala and many others too numerous to mention.

It should be remembered that in Nigeria, the first female pilot is Lady Chinyere Onyemucheya from Akwete Ndoki in Akwa west L.G.A of Abia state.

Even in the judiciary Hon. Justice Aloma (retired) occupied the Apex seat in the judiciary and many others.

More to mention Chief Lady Ezinne Oji the first Local Government Female Executive Chairman in Nigeria, from Ikwuano LGA.

Therefore, gender equality has come to stay after many years of dark ages.

In that regard as many women are in the fields of engineering, journalism, administration, accountancy, the legal profession, the teaching profession, etc. So, gender equality is therefore here with us and will continue to be with us to ensure the rapid socio-political and economic development of Nigeria.

I’m appealing to the government to adhere to this 35% affirmation because it helps to increase and stabilize awareness.

I urge all women in the world who are occupying any position to utilize effectively and bring out the best in Women.
