The Nigerian Labour Congress union Rivers State Chapter today, the 26th of July, 2022 kick started the three days nationwide solidarity protest to express their disapproval for the continuous strike with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has lingered for over five months. Other affiliate unions to the Nigerian Labour Congress were all out at the NLC Secretariat, Port Harcourt to join voices in an attempt to put an end to the ongoing ASUU strike.

Protesters were seen marching down to the government house in a bid to express themselves concerning the strike. According to Comrade Azumachita Ogochukwu, vice president of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) “the union would like to bring to the understanding of the government that our children can no longer stay at home, it has been five months since the universities have been closed due to union based strike action and the government of Nigeria led by president Mohamadu Buhari looks to be unconcerned”.

Furthermore, NLC State Chairperson, Comr. Beatrice Ituto during her speech reading said “ the government should establish a framework for repositioning of our universities for competitive service delivery relevant in line with their mandate. This is of great importance for national development”.

The Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike was unavoidably absent to receive the massive crowd but he was fully represented by the state’s permanent secretary on special services, Dr. George Nweke. Dr. George welcomed the crowd and acknowledged the writings on the placards. He promised to deliver the various messages to the Governor as soon as he returns. He also responded by saying “the people concerned in Abuja will know that you were here”
