Honourable Minister of Aviation
Federal Ministry of Aviation
Annex 3, Federal Secretarial Complex
Shehu Shagari Way
Maitama, Abuja
Nigeria

Your Excellency,
Greetings from Dubai. We trust this letter finds you well.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of planned reductions in Emirates' operations to Nigeria. With effect from 15 August 2022, Emirates will be forced to reduce flights frorn Dubai to Lagos from 11 per week to 7 per week. We have had no choice but to take this action, to mitigate the continued losses Emirates is experiencing as a result of funds being blocked in Nigeria.

As of July 2022, Emirates has US$ 85 million of funds awaiting repatriation from Nigeria. This figure has been rising by more than $US 10 million every month, as the ongoing operational costs of our 11 weekly flights to Lagos and 5 to Abuja continue to accumulate.

These funds are urgently needed to meet our operational costs and maintain the commercial viability of our services to Nigeria. We simply cannot continue to operate at the current level in the face of mounting losses, especially in the challenging post COVID-19 climate. Emirates did try to stem the losses by proposing to pay for fuel in Nigeria in Nairas, which would have at least reduced one element of our ongoing costs, however this request was denied by the supplier. This means that not only are Emirates' revenues accumulating, we also have to send hard currency into Nigeria to sustain our own operation. Meanwhile our revenues are out of reach and not even earning credit interest.

Your Excellency, this is not a decision we have taken lightly. Indeed, we have made every effort to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find a solution to this issue. Our Senior Vice-President met with the Deputy Governor of the CBN in May and followed spot the meeting by letter to the Governor himself the following month, however no positive response was received. Meetings were also held with Emirates' own bank in Nigeria and in collaboration with IATA to discuss improving FX allocation, but with limited success.

Despite our considerable efforts, the situation continues to deteriorate. We are now in the unfortunate position of having to cut flights, to mitigate against further losses going forward.

While we appreciate that this issue is primarily a financial one, any support you could kindly provide would be warmly welcomed by Esthetes. We are confident that your valuable involvement would make a real difference in improving this very difficult situation.

Should there be any positive development in the coming days, we will of course re-evaluate this decision. Meanwhile thank you for your understanding and please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss the matter further.

Yours sincerely,
Sheikh Majid Al Mualla
DSVP International Affairs

Na wa o.
Waiting for Mr Big liar to come and say rubbish again that Emirates didn't wait enough to get the money out. You are looking for investors, you got, they did their legitimate businesses even under harsh economic policies, now to get their money out, you are choking them with useless dragging.
Which kain country be this? But let proper investigations be done on government thieves stealing money, you will be amazed billions of money outflown to other countries monthly. That one is not difficult to do at all.
People are surprised that dollars are scarce, wait for the election time, it will be available for their cronies. Choking her citizens business, chocking foreigners profits. Useless country, useless leaders.
Bubu and Emiefele should leave the sit if they are lost... But... it is naija....

Instead of people to be fighting for breakups, regional independence before it gets out of hand, (cos those bastards up there have one mission, to take over the South), they are shouting cassava, agbado, atikulate.. Obidient.. Bla bla bla. You will soon see another exodus to the new party if new government emerges.

Same set of thieves in new clothes. Nigeria is beyond repairs especially with the set of repeated politicians.

Did anyone see the recent videos of elected governor of ekiti and osun states flying same private jets, jubilating and dancing, and wining together with some of their aides and few family members? I mean apc and pdp incoming governors oo, after they won elections ooo, and you think they have you and me in their mind? E go shock yu. Una mumu never do.
I pray new blood enter like Obi, but I want to see how he will manage same sets of law breakers, that are good in crossing from one party to another for selfish interests. How he will manage the majority of the senate and house under different parties that are only interested in their families and their sugar mummies, I want to know. I pray neutral person flows in.
Before you abuse me, think deeply on what will be different from the same sets of thieves and evil leaders that will still be around corridors of powers?
Break the gathem country to 10 pieces and let everyone know him papa pikin. We will do well more that way as long as we don't allow evil politicians have access to us...

sad. Really yet another sad development.

However, I don't seem to understand the second paragraph.

As of July 2022, Emirates has US$ 85 million of funds awaiting repatriation from Nigeria. This figure has been rising by more than $US 10 million every month, as the ongoing operational costs of our 11 weekly flights to Lagos and 5 to Abuja continue to accumulate.

How did the funds awaiting repatriation in July 2022 begin to rise by more than $US 10million Every month ! ?

July is ending today. Or was it a forecast? Or they actually meant July 2021 ?

In any case, Nigeria really needs to do better.

I am not sure why this letter was coined this way. The non-repatration of revenue proceeds has led to cashflow constraints but not necessarily loss in business profits or revenue.

The only loss in profits I see is the inability of Emirates to earn investment interests on these funds. There would also be loss in profits if funds have to be obtained from more expensive sources to meet short-term obligations outside Nigeria. These two activities are financing and investment activities and hence not operational in nature.

The better decision that Emirates should have made is the deployment of these funds to local Investments that can earn higher comparative returns versus returns available outside Nigeria, after all, Nigeria has one of the highest interest rates in the world. I suspect this is what the Nigerian Government is trying to achieve as keeping these funds within would steer the economy.

Nigeria should launch their airline

11 flights per week? From one foreign Airline?
It shows how lucrative Nigeria can be if the leaders are interested in making the country great

This is the corruption that will never bring in FDI. EMEFIELE the dunce will rather give the USD available to looters than allow those earning in USD to do as they wish with their funds.

Why would you block corporations from reparations when they’re tax compliant? What else do you want? For them to run at a loss and take their profits in Naira that goes down by at least %1 daily since over a year.

Nigerian publicly traded companies are another Avenue for FRAUD. The SEC is a part of it and this will continue without stringent laws and policies.
