He admitted breaking the law; his concern is why must the officer, point a GUN AT HIM.

it's not ok,right or good for a police officer to point a GUN AT HIM,he is not a thief.

We have a LONG WAY YO GO IN TJIS COUNTRY.

I think he had not denied breaking the rule. The problem is why point a gun or take his car?

What happens to taking picture of the plate and the location where he was. Besides he being popular means no way he can escape the punishment.

Police should learn civic engagement

Let him go to America and as a black man resist arrest with American police after a traffic infarction. I can assure you he will be tweeting from the hospital bed. That is if he is lucky.

shorrop there and don’t say what you don’t know - have you ever seen a US police jump into someone else’s car and drive the car away ? to where exactly ? a store front ? for what purpose ? A US police will issue you a traffic ticket and you will go to court on the appointed date on that ticket to defend your citation- if it is for lack of insurance- present your insurance as valid as of when that ticket was issued and you go your own way- If for overspending - they bring their tracker - if you can convince the judge the tracker is bias and what is being seen is false - you go away without paying anything, if not you pay the fine, if you do not have the money, they create a monthly payment plan that will be easier for you to pay over a given period - very easy

However, if you are trying to talk about 5 or 6 incidences of reckless shootings in a year by the police that makes people shout “Black Lives Matter” or police brutality in America- do not forget, more cops gets killed in the US when they stop suspicious vehicles than police kill anyone - the police won’t shoot you in America If you are respectful and obey every word they say except for very few exceptions one can classify as excessive use of force - come on, in a country of 300 million people and over 4 million police and law enforcement officers - 5 will be crazy in a whole year - but in naija half of police officers are crazy

So, please don’t compare the US police with naija police - we all know the only reason his key was collected at gun point is to take Rufai’s car to the station so they can extort money from him - not because they want to enforce the law!

Why arrest him anyways? You commit driving offence, you collect ticket and you pay. Arresting, using gun, taking his car is not necessary biko. The guy didn't say he was right, he accepted his fault na.

The video released by him didn't show how that police pointed gun at him. Don't over trust anybody. Both police and citizens are not different.

If he didn't accept he was at fault, why will he offer to pay the infraction ticket? He said, he admitted and wanted to pay for his offense. The punishment is 70k or get arrested, so why will the Policeman leave him stranded? In developed nations, Police will still be using sir for you while sending you to jail.

I think the point is missed here. Rufai admitted taking the BRT LANE as posited by the Police although his tweet did not confirm that, but what Rufai is trying to tell us is that you do not need to jump infront of the vehicle. In advanced Nations, you will go home and you will receive your ticket via email or Telephone inviting you to appear in court. No police officer will drag your steering wheel with you. We need exposure to understand this. Technology can do this better without police engaging anyone.

please be realistic..
This issue isnt about advance country..

You and I know that there is nothing like ticket here..there is no reliable database that contains the phone number and email of every Nigerian with a vehicle or motorcycle including the agberos and okada riders..

in the absence of this ..when you break traffic laws..your car should be seized then any necessary bill you need to pay for your crime .you walk into the station and settle it and collect your car.that is the system that works for us..until we get to the status of "developed countries"
when you are arrested for breaking such law and you do not submit your self easily and peaceful or you resist. the officers have every right to pull his arm or use extra measures...

am pretty sure if it was the case of all this hausa guys riding okada on BRT lane..your stand is that the okada should be seize..abi you wan tell me say na aboki go receive email of ticket? tongue tongue where as in your so called developed countries the motocyclist and his bike would be allowed free and ticket will be served..HYPOCRISY!

All these people saying “ will you break traffic laws in UK”? Yes people break traffic laws even the British or other citizens from developed nations and that is why traffic cops are there to enforce it in a civil manner. For example do you know how much the city of Cape Town generates from traffic violations? That’s even a means of revenue generation for the city. Why is Nigeria different? Why point a gun to a motorist and then forcefully take his keys? These officers will keep on misbehaving because they don’t have proper training and their superiors keep on shielding them.

The government divides the road, a private man or firm run business on that road and anybody else who follow that road is fined 70k.. but the private firm makes money for their boss, a supposedly private person.. No, Nigeria can not work.

if BRTs are government owned, it will make sense. How much has BRR generated for government since inception.

I believe rufai.

My cousin recently came home from Canada for his father-In laws funeral. We got him a driver who wasn’t too familiar with Lagos but could match the gragra of Lagos drivers.

He was in the passenger seat directing the driver with google maps. As they came down the Abule-egba bridge, they see this edifice. 2 vehicle pass under and speed away but as they approach they read the words on the floor - “ BRT lanes do not pass “ oops - they reverse and pass the side road. As they drive along they are stopped by the cops.

Oga you passed a BRT lane. Sir we saw the words and reversed , it was a mistake. Follow us to the station.
They begged and offered 10k, the cops wanted 300,000 because they detected his accent. He was delayed for 2hours while other vehicles who did the same thing they did were let go.

give him a ticket, collecting car comes in after refused payment on a time frame.

how are they managing the VIO cameras? they already have something working.. Police in Nigeria are just unnecessarily archaic and incorrigible.

Exactly laws are broken and there are fines - defined fines and penalties for infractions which can be googled online and which are set. Our fines are plucked from the sky and dolled out based on feelings.

Was there a clear road sign there stating no entry brt lane. This is becuase i have been to many places in Lagos were there are no clear road signs but I was saved by residents who warned me not to use that way, that it is one way. These traffic officers are not really interested in helping motorists obey the law all they are interested in is in generating revenue for the state government. This is very wrong and criminal .The road signs should be boldly written in such a way that everyone can see them. How would someone know if its one way if the road signs are not boldly written.

I know what I am saying..

if he is driving on the road the next day..and he is stopped at a checkpoint the police at that point have no means of checking his details via his vehicle license or whatever to see that he committed an offense few days ago..all the officers do is to check if his vehicle is ok and he is allowed to go free... Police vehicles are not fitted with computer to validate things like this the same way you see in other developed countries..there is already a sophisticated system that will still compel vehicle owners to willingly pay the charges on their ticket,,such doesnt exist here..hence their method of enforcing traffic laws can never work in this part of the world...

the only way to enforce traffic laws in developing and under developed countries like Nigeria is to seize their vehicles and motorcycle and the criminal goes to the station to answer to his crime
