Anambra State Law School Students Lament As The State Government Rejects Their A by Etiyeokwe: 12:35pm On Aug 14, 2022
The body which is known as the National Association of Anambra Law School Students, delivered a letter titled ‘APPEAL FOR EDUCATION SUPPORT (BURSARY)' to the office of the state Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, on the 24th of May, 2022. The letter, which was delivered by delegates from the Students’ body was warmly received by the Chief of staff. The delegates subsequently had meetings with the Commissioner for education, Commissioner for justice, Attorney general of the state and Secretary to the state government, at different dates and times.
According to the contents of the letter, it stated that the appeal became necessary following financial difficulties which posed threats to most of the students in their academic pursuits.
Law school is expensive. It poses threat to the average Nigerian, and because of this, some students have resorted to their state governments for assistance.
Yobe state government gave a cash of N500,000 ( five hundred thousand naira) only and a brand new Lenovo laptop to each of their law school students. Enugu state government doled out N16m for 160 law school students who are indigenes of Enugu state. Other States are, Sokoto, Boronu, Delta, Rivers, etc.
Currently, there are more than 250 law school students from Anambra state, who are undergoing one year programme across the six Nigerian law schools. The implication of this is that, at the end of 2022, Anambra state will be producing more than 250 Barristers and Solicitors.
Unfortunately, after several meetings, the appeal was turned down on the ground that the state is facing security challenges, and that such appeal is not in its priority.
In sane countries, students, especially those in the postgraduate studies, have access to grants which enable them pursue their careers with ease. But in Nigeria, it’s the opposite. Education is relegated to the background.
